G’s Basketball Ranking – February 10, 2025

Welcome back, sports fans, as the GCR officially expands into college basketball. If you missed the previous post, the rating system that was developed about a dozen years ago, and modified annually, went through a simplification overhaul. A piece of personal information about me, I have dedicated my “real” career to continuous improvement earning Six Sigma and Lean titles that allowed me to see the world and figure out how to create a mathematical monster beyond my years of math education. And, sometimes, physician heal thyself, is an apt truism. The program was muddy and gave rankings and projections that I just didn’t understand. It was time to get the waste out and build some consistency.

That simplification on the football side of things solved a serious of problems that men’s and women’s college basketball that prevented me from including them in the mix. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for years, but the complexity and my job got in the way. During the 2024-25 football season, I ran the new model side-by-side to prove its worth. My friend, JW, told me that to add basketball was foolish and too much work. Beginning in December, I worked on the women’s side first, primarily because there are 2 fewer teams than the men’s side (Citadel and VMI) and it’s easier in the program to add a team than to delete a team. After coding the schedule (yes, over 10000 lines), then catching the scores up to date (yes, over 6000 lines), and validating the result, I repeated it for the men. I started February with both groups current and working, then maintained for the next week or so. Now, it’s time to open the GCR Basketball Edition.

A couple of things about basketball. There are almost as many non-Division I teams who play at least one game against these teams as there are D1 schools. One of the rules with basketball is there is no such thing as Power 4 or FCS or any of that. With the number of games played, the degrees of freedom are enough to work without adjustment. Every D1 school is treated exactly like every other. However, there is a discount for playing a non-D1 school in the strength of schedule formula. I’ve also added something close to the RPI formula and find it interesting that there are a few significant ranking differences between the formula and the RPI. I’m still looking at different ways to present this data so it will look different next time, and hopefully, easier to read.
