G’s Basketball Ranking or The Inaugural Men’s Top 364

Welcome back college sports fans. On Monday, we posted the first women’s college basketball ranking and today we follow up with the men’s. I won’t go into the whole spiel (see last post) of how basketball finally came to be. I was told by multiple friends that I was a fool for even thinking about it because of the sheer number of teams (362 WBB and 364 MBB) and number of games (~30 for the women and ~31 for the men). It’s over 12,000 games compared to less than 3,200 for football. Yes, it’s more work and requires daily upkeep, but I did find a way to make it simpler for me to manage it.

For the rest of the season, the women’s Top 362 will post on Monday and the men’s Top 364 (Citadel and VMI do not have women’s teams) will post on Wednesday. Next season, the rankings will begin in November. I’m not sure how meaningful they will be until a few games are played by every team, but we’ll learn that together.

I like this look better than the one used for the women on Monday (will fix that next week), but I have to explain. Besides the rank, wins, and losses, I’ve added a very close approximation to the official RPI, with its rank as well. The Score field is the actual rating, which is a combination of performance score and strength of schedule score. While I’m not planning to provide predictions for 12,000 games, the score is a good approximation. Take the difference in the two teams, add 2.5 for the home team (if one exists) and there’s your GCR point spread. One last thing: in football, there is a difference in Core 4 vs Group of 5 vs FCS vs non-Division I teams. Because each team only plays 12 games, it is necessary to adjust for a low degree of freedom to balance the inherent schedule differences. In basketball, there are enough games that it no longer is an influence. Therefore, every division I team is equal whether the Big Ten, the Summit League, the SWAC, or the Big East. Games against non-D1 teams are discounted, but that’s it.
