Welcome back, oh great and wonderful college football fans. It was rivalry week: a week full of animosity and downright hatred at times resulting in more in-game fighting, more unsportsmanlike penalties, more post-game flag-induced melees at mid-field, and more excuses from the losers. These games are so important that after losing his 4th straight to Michigan, Ohio St head coach Ryan Day’s job is in danger (or so social media seems to think). It’s a week when it’s commonplace for games that should be blowouts are closer (Georgia’s 2-point 8-overtime win over Georgia Tech), and stress levels are higher just from watching these games. It’s a no guilt in running up the score (see Indiana’s last score with 1:48 to play in the 66-0 thrashing of Purdue). It’s college football at its finest. And, sadly, it’s a sign of the end. There’s only one remaining regular season game (Army/Navy), the conference championship games, the bowl games/playoffs, and the FCS playoffs.
…..
Speaking of the FCS playoffs, the 8-game first round had some very cool games. Congratulations to Abilene Christian, Illinois St, Lehigh, Montana, Rhode Island, Tarleton, Tennessee Martin, and Villanova.
…..
Speaking of playoffs, I’ve heard tons of speculation about who gets in the new 12-team format and who doesn’t. Will a conference championship game loss drop a team out? How much, if any, does strength of schedule count? How about recency – do the hottest teams get consideration? Do head-to-head matchups matter (or do early-in-the-season-head-to-head matchups matter)? Do injuries to critical players in losses make those losses “forgivable?” The fact is nobody knows. This is the inaugural year. Yes, committees picked the top 25 for the 4-team playoff for years, but this is much more difficult.
…..
Speaking of head-to-head, which works better in the pros, I put this together to show it doesn’t always make a lot of sense. Notre Dame lost to N Illinois who lost to Ball St who lost to Vanderbilt who lost to Georgia St who lost to Old Dominion who lost to Virginia Tech who lost to Rutgers who lost to Wisconsin who lost to Southern Cal who lost to Maryland who lost to Indiana who lost to Ohio St who lost to Michigan who lost to Texas who lost to Georgia who lost to Mississippi who lost to Kentucky who lost to Auburn who lost to Arkansas who lost to Oklahoma St who lost to BYU who lost to Kansas who lost to Arizona St who lost to Cincinnati who lost to West Virginia who lost to Pittsburgh who lost to Louisville who lost to, you guessed it, Notre Dame.
…..
There were 16 teams with 5 wins heading into this week, with 14 bowl-eligible spots available (Virginia/Virginia Tech and E Michigan/W Michigan were winner gets a bowl games). However, there were just 5 bowl spots left, and it looked like we may have too many. Would they add a game like the second Frisco Bowl a few years ago or would teams be left out (done many times)? Turns out, it doesn’t matter. The 5-win teams went 5-11 giving us exactly 82. Congratulations to Coastal Carolina, NC St, North Texas, Virginia Tech, and W Michigan.
…..
Without further ado, here is the final regular season Top 263 of the GCR. Thank you for reading and sharing with others, G
