Welcome back, college football fans, after yet another wild and wooly week of NCAA Division I action. There were a lot a great games and great wins, but I would be remiss if I did not call out Indiana (10-0/1) for hitting double digits wins for the first time in their history by defeating Michigan (5-5/32) for only the 11th time in 73 tries. That leaves just Iowa St (7-2/21) who were upset by Kansas (3-6/63) and Vanderbilt (6-4/66) who lost to South Carolina (6-3/25) as the only remaining Core 4 teams not ever to have 10+ wins in a season. Iowa St would need to win 3 out of 4, including their bowl game, to join the club. Vandy’s 4th loss eliminates them from contention.

Sad news for Miami FL (9-1/11) who lost to Georgia Tech (6-4/43) to break up their bid for a perfect season. Congratulations to Marist (1-9/233) of the Pioneer League who broke their losing streak against Stetson (2-7/261).

To qualify for the FCS playoffs, a team can either win their conference (Ivy, MEAC, and SWAC do not participate) or they can win 7+ games. There are now 24 teams with 7 or more wins (plus the eventual victor in the Patriot League regardless of win total). There are 14 more just 1-win away from qualifying.

The Ivy League does not play in the post season at all. Dartmouth and Harvard are tied at 4-1 (with Harvard holding the tiebreaker) for the lead. The MEAC winner (South Carolina St has the edge at 3-0 in conference) will play in the Celebration Bowl on December 14th. Their opponent will be the winner of the SWAC championship. Jackson St (6-0 in conference) has the East wrapped up and will probably face Southern (5-1) from the West.

For the FBS side of things, there were 19 teams with 5 wins looking to gain bowl eligibility this week. Those teams were just 8-11, bringing the total number of qualifiers to 62 out of the 82 needed to fill the bowl slots counting the 12-team playoff. The new additions are Georgia Tech, Jacksonville St, Liberty, Marshall, Ohio, San Jose St, South Carolina, and TCU. There were also 11 games which had a team with 6 losses trying to avoid the dreaded 7th and bowl-killing loss. Only 3 survived the test moving the eliminated total to 22. Joining the wait-until-next-year teams are FAU, Georgia St, Middle Tennessee, Oklahoma St, Rice, Temple, UAB, and Utah St. That leaves 50 schools that have not clinched a bowl or been eliminated yet. Let the drama build (cue suspenseful music).
