And then there were 2. Oregon (11-0/1) who was idle this weekend and Montana St (12-0/92) who won their rivalry game against Montana (8-4/171) are the only undefeated teams remaining. Army (9-1/16) and Indiana (10-1/5) both lost. This weekend was the epitome of this season. Let’s get rid of divisions (except for the Sun Belt and the SWAC), they said, that will create more drama. Check. Let’s expand the playoffs to 12 teams to sort of mimic the 24-team playoff of the FCS, they said, that will bring more drama. Check. The playoff committee’s top 25 were just 16-7 (.696) this week. Oregon and Tulane were idle. The 23 teams that played had been 176-33 (.842) this season. Just to add to the chaos we have Kansas (5-6/40) who just did something no other team has ever done: 3 straight wins against AP ranked teams [Iowa St (9-2/13), BYU (9-2/11), and Colorado (8-3/25)] while having a losing record and wreaking havoc in the Big 12. Now if they can beat Baylor (7-4/31) next week they will be bowl eligible.

There are now 77 bowl-eligible teams and 41 teams that will not have a post-season. 16 teams remain. Look for a bowl specific blog coming up later today. The FCS finished up their regular season (except for 3 games in the SWAC next weekend) and their 24-team playoff will be announced soon. I’ll talk about that in the same post.
