G’s Evaluation or The Top 263 for Week 4

Wow! What a series of games. Thursday night saw a road upset of epic proportions when South Alabama (2-2/108) opened the Sun Belt season with a 48-14 beat down at App St (2-2/120). Friday’s three games were won by a combined 11 points and included 2 contests go into overtime. On Saturday we saw James Madison (3-0/25), who are in their 3rd season as an FBS team, go into Chapel Hill and put up 53 on the Tar Heels (3-1/50). During the broadcast, the announcers showed a graphic that the North Carolina men’s basketball team did not give up 53 in a half last year. At one point 36 points behind, UNC went on a 21-3 run and looked like it could be a comeback for the ages, but the Dukes won a b-ball-like scoring game 70-50. Both Army (3-0/22) and Navy (3-0/30) are 2-0 in the American AND they are the only teams with any conference wins. If they end up 1-2 in the conference, they would play for the championship the week before they play their (officially non-conference) traditional game. I could keep going for pages and pages. Some teams surprised, some were perhaps exposed, some were idle, but all 263 teams have now played (thank you, Ivy League for joining in) and are in the GCR.

Once again, we have a new #1 as Texas (4-0/1) took over from idle Alabama (3-0/3). The top 4 are all from the SEC and none of them are called Georgia (3-0/7). The conference has dominated the top half of both the GCR and the AP poll so far this season. Big games are coming up (teaser for the next Expectation) and we can anticipate some changes. This week’s top 25 include 8 different conferences, however, including 6 from both the SEC and Big Ten, 5 from the ACC, 4 from the Big 12 and one each from the American, Mountain West, Pac (1)2, and the Sun.
