Welcome back, oh great and wonderful college football fans, for the latest weirdness that is the GCR Top 265. I say that only because most of the teams have not showcased who they are yet. There are teams that play very, um, uninspiring non-conference slates. There are others, like Virginia Tech, who despite losing both games, picked an opening slate against not one but two SEC bowl teams from a year ago. If you look at most FCS conference standings, it looks like the whole conference is awful (but getting paid well for losing) and most Core 4 conferences look unbeatable, as a group. Then you have the weirdness of Virginia and NC St playing a non-conference game against each other in week 2. Seriously, there was no other team in the country available – perhaps from another Core 4 conference that you’ve never played before or haven’t in 25 years or were a past bowl game rematch? The GCR has adjusted over the years for many things such as teams playing twice in the same regular season (happening again this year in the Pac-12) and adding the FCS to the mainstream formulae, but I haven’t figured out a non-manual way to tell the program that two teams from the ACC who play each other might not be a conference game.

But I digress. The 131 games this weekend provided some wonderful entertainment like Army (1-1/77) who lost to FCS Tarleton (3-0/130) in week 1 yet scored 10 in the 4th to beat Kansas St (1-2/82) 24-21. South Florida (2-0/13) invaded the Swamp managing the end-of-game clock perfectly to set up a game-winning field goal upsetting Florida (1-1/75). Mississippi St (2-0/3) who was just awful in 2024 and opened the season on the road at a Group of 5 school took down Arizona St (1-1/65) after giving up a 17-0 halftime lead with a game-winning touchdown with less than a minute to go. We had more than 20 games delayed due to weather and some schools came back ready to play, some not so much. Congratulations to Portland St (0-3/248) who finally scored in a 50-20 tromping by North Dakota (1-1/169). Now Akron (0-2/133) with its second straight scoreless game is the only team without a point. Every team not in the Ivy League, who start their season on September 19th, has now played at least one game.

Because the GCR rewards play against good opponents, the rankings may appear a bit wonky until conference play begins in earnest over the next couple of weeks. Remember the GCR has no initial bias that Team A will be good (like human polls), nor does it use any previous season data (like FPI or Sagarin) to make assumptions. The wonkiness is expected and good in that it can begin debate and conversation. Here’s another reason and I’ll use Georgia (2-0/24) as an example. Last week they beat Marshall (0-2/124) solidly, but not by 70 points. This week they beat a good Austin Peay (1-1/121) team after the Governors started their season with a victory. Marshall, however, gave FBS newcomer Missouri St (1-1/94) their first win. So far, Georgia has played two teams (the future is not relevant in the GCR) and they were 0-2 this week. The past is relevant, so those two teams were 1-1 in week 1. Marshall’s and Austin Peay’s rest-of-the-year records will be critical in calculating Georgia’s SOS as the season progresses. But for now, an undefeated team has probably played teams with a combined losing record. Likewise, any winless team will have faced teams with winning records. That won’t always be the case as more games are played, but that’s why the GCR is not even close to the AP polls right now.
