Welcome back, college football fans, after a rough and tumble and fantastic weekend! The standings are all wonky compared to what we’d expect. Clemson and Florida St have both lost ACC games while Louisville, Georgia Tech, and Miami FL are undefeated on the season. Indiana and Maryland are still perfect along with perennials Ohio St and Oregon in the Big Ten. The Big 12 has 4 undefeated teams: BYU, Houston, Iowa St, and Texas Tech (notice the lack of Utah, Baylor, and the Arizonas). If someone said the SEC still had five unsullied squads, you wouldn’t be surprised. No, not Alabama, not Georgia, not Tennessee, not Florida, not LSU, not Auburn, but rather Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and Vanderbilt. The Group of 5 conferences add four more to the “it’s good to be us” group: Memphis, Navy, North Texas and UNLV. In the FCS, the Ivy League has three 2-0 teams (Dartmouth, Harvard, Yale) and the other conferences add eight more: Lehigh, Montana, North Dakota St, Presbyterian, South Dakota St, Tarleton, Tennessee Tech, and West Georgia. That makes 31 teams left with goose eggs in the loss column. Special shout out to Memphis, Presbyterian, and Tennessee Tech who share the longest current winning streak in Division I football at nine games. Each won easily yesterday.

In the Core 4 conferences, there is but one winless team – the hapless UCLA Bruins who have already switched head coaches. The Group of 5 share 3 teams who have yet to celebrate with Sam Houston, Oregon St, and UMASS. The FCS, in addition to 0-2 Cornell of the Ivy League, add 7 to the total: Alcorn St, East Texas, Holy Cross, Mississippi Valley, Portland St, Samford, and St Francis. Congratulations to these 12 late bloomers.

We’ve reached the end of September and for the second week in a row, the GCR #1 team (Southern Cal last week) took a loss – we can only assume it’s from the pressure of being ranked so high in our calculations. So, apologies up front to our new leader, Indiana. The end of a month also means a special episode this week where the GCR will rank all of the conferences from worst to first, so far this season.
