Welcome back, college football fans. Every week, we expect a good number of upsets. To make the point, the GCR had 14 of the 52 FBS games with the winner being the Vegas underdog and an additional 4 that had the underdog covering (note: we were 10-8 in those games). That’s roughly 1/3 of the matchups. This weekend, just in the ACC, North Carolina (+1.5) upset Syracuse (not a GCR pick), SMU (+12.5) upended Miami FL (a GCR pick), Duke (+3.5) beat Clemson (a GCR pick), and NC St (+5.5) gave Georgia Tech their first loss (not a GCR pick). We were expecting Wake Forest to beat Florida St, but the Seminoles won easily. That is 4 of the 8 conference games that ended in upset. Just a highlight of yet another exciting week in college football.

We are down to 9 undefeated teams in Division I. Tarleton (Abilene Chr), Georgia Tech (NC St), and Navy (North Texas) all lost. That leaves BYU, Harvard, Indiana, Lehigh, Montana, North Dakota St, Ohio St, Tennessee Tech (who now has the longest D1 streak at 13 games), and Texas A&M. Portland St finally notched a win by taking down Weber St leaving 4 teams still looking for that elusive victory: Murray St, Sam Houston, St Francis, and UMASS.

Congratulations are in order for 10 teams who became bowl eligible with their 6th victory of the season, bringing the total to 50 (82 needed to fill the spots). Those 10 are Arizona St, Illinois, Kennesaw St, Minnesota, New Mexico, Notre Dame, Old Dominion, SMU, Southern Cal, and UCONN. There are 24 teams sitting on 5 wins. Alas, there is always sad news that matches the good. 4 new teams suffered their 7th loss, eliminating them from bowl eligibility, bringing the total to 13 for the season. The official “there’s always next year” additions this week are Arkansas, Middle Tennessee, Purdue, and South Alabama. 18 more are sitting on 6 wins and must win out to avoid being on the sidelines in December.

Two more notes before we get to the rankings. Because the games this week began in October, although the majority were on 11/1, look for a mid-week Conference Comparison in a G’s Exploration. We are officially at the 2/3 mark for the season. The Big Ten is dominating at the very top, but the Comparison will look at depth as well. Be on the lookout for that. The second thing is a thank you to Conference USA for giving us games on Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout October. They are transitioning this role to the MAC for November. I love these midweek games and not just because I get to watch football on non-traditional days. I love the fact that these mid-majors, to use a basketball term, are on ESPN networks or CBS Sports during these special weeks, instead of being relegated to ESPN+ on Saturdays. Please support these teams who rarely play in front of large crowds or on TV.
