Welcome back, college football fans, as the temps drop, the heat rises. We had some close calls including an OT win by Virginia over North Carolina, and complete failures to play for 60 minutes when South Carolina and Mississippi St lost late leads over Alabama and Texas, respectively, and Purdue’s QB catching his own deflected pass, then fumbling on the same play leading to a 3-point loss to Rutgers. What could have been a mini upset week turned into an almost as expected week. The top 15 of the GCR remained pretty much the same with just a tiny bit of shuffling.

We are approximately 2/3 of the way through the season. How many of us had Georgia Tech on top of the ACC at this point and undefeated. And who put the major contenders for the other ACC championship spot as Louisville, Miami FL, and Virginia? Anyone? Who had Indiana as the other undefeated team in the Big Ten at this stage along with Ohio St? Who had BYU and Cincinnati as the only Big 12 teams without a conference loss? And Houston and Texas Tech as the only 1-loss teams? The SEC is closer to “normal” with Alabama and Texas A&M perfect in conference with Georgia, Mississippi, and Texas with 1-loss each…but then there’s Vanderbilt who is 7-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference. Who picked all of these. We surely did not.

The Group of 5 has some of the same characteristics. Navy and Tulane are both undefeated in the conference with Memphis and South Florida looking on just one loss behind. But who had East Carolina, North Texas (7-1 overall) and Temple with 1 loss as well? Conference USA has Jacksonville St 3-0 in conference which is not that big a surprise, but Kennesaw St is tied with them. In the mighty MAC, the only remaining perfect team (4-0 in conference play) is…Miami of Ohio. Toledo, preseason favorite, is 2-2. Ohio is 3-1 along with Buffalo, C Michigan, and W Michigan. No surprise in the Mountain West that Boise St and San Deigo St are undefeated. Hawaii fighting for a championship game spot at 3-1 is a bit of a shocker, but like the SEC, not too bad. The Sun Belt’s best team is James Madison (in fact, the GCR has the Dukes as the best G5 team and deserving of a playoff spot at this point). Coastal Car, who has had some great seasons in the past, started off the season slowly, but have come alive in SBC play just 1 game behind JMU in the east. Who had as contenders for the Sun West, Southern Miss and Troy, both undefeated in conference? Arkansas St at 3-1 could sneak in with some upsets.

This is what is so great about college sports. Sure, there are dynasties. Sure, for every Ohio St and Alabama, there is a ULM or Akron. But Clemson is 3-4 and Vanderbilt is 7-1. Penn St is 3-4 and Southern Miss is 6-2. Wisconsin is 2-6 and Virginia is 7-1. We have made it very clear that preseason polls are biased and useless. The rhetorical questions in the preceding paragraphs are the reason that statement is true. The fact is no-one picked the “oddities” of this season. The truth is most seasons have “oddities,” we just don’t know which ones until they happen.

Some congratulations are in order for our 16 newly bowl-eligible teams, which brings the total for the season to 40 of the 82 necessary to fill the bowl games. Boise St, Iowa, Louisville, Miami FL, Michigan, Nebraska, Pittsburgh, San Diego St, Southern Miss, TCU, Tennessee, Texas, Troy, Utah, Washington, and W Kentucky each got the requisite 6th win this weekend. There are 20 teams with 5 wins, so we could have a big jump in the coming week.

However, we trebled our bowl-disqualification list jumping from 3 (Oregon St, Sam Houston, and UMASS) to 9 with Boston College, Charlotte, E Michigan, Georgia St, Nevada, and Oklahoma St losing their 7th and clinching a losing season. As a heart-broken Gamecock fan, there is always next year. Yes, sad fans are sad fans. There are 10 teams with 6 losses who are facing the cliff.
