G’s Evaluation or Turn the Page

Hello and welcome to the first post-LSU championship blog. What a fun game to watch last night. At times it looked like a chess match not just between the coaches but between the QBs. In the end, LSU was the better team and the GCR fell to 26-14 for the FBS during the bowl season. That’s not the only reason I’m ready to switch to the new, updated formulas, but I decided it is time. There’s one more ranking today and then it’s all about next year. So, today’s evaluation is using the new formula (I am not going to post the old formula results). I am going to do a bunch of evaluation comparing the two, especially in the predictive portion, and I’ll publish those. It’s time to turn the page – out with the old error-prone and in with the better more accurate model. Some of you may complain but I’ll always remember my Stat professor who, when asked why we had to have a test that week would respond, “we’re having the test because it’s my party.” An analysis of the final rankings using the flawed formula had some serious head-scratching results and, quite frankly, is not the level of excellence I expect to show here. Why do I care so much? First, as a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt and Sensei errors make me lose sleep. Second, as Arthur Miller wrote in “The Crucible”: “because it is my name. Because I will have no other in my life.” Yes, I played Proctor in college and it’s one of the best climactic moments in theatre.

I’ve started some of the research I need to do and plan to have the first posts this weekend. Thankfully, my twin brother, G, which I really don’t have is doing all of the work. Sometimes, the research may seem like it’s taking a long time. It is. It’s about being detailed and getting it right. I’m asking you to hang in there and there will always be more to come. While you are waiting, please take the opportunity to comment about something you’d like to see in a future post. A few people have already reached out and given a lot of really good suggestions. I need the help and the more ideas the better, especially since we have a long offseason to deal with.

Without further ado, here is the final, official GCR ranking for the 2019-2020 football season. Congratulations LSU (and North Dakota State) for winning the championship and capturing the top spot (and top FCS spot). I should probably call out App State for best Group of 5 team. Better luck next year, Texas Southern (256th), Akron (worst Group of 5), and Arkansas (worst Power 5). Please let me know your thoughts and as always share with others. Thanks for reading, G
