Welcome back, college football fans, after a wonderful but exhausting weekend of the greatest sport in the world. Georgia (3-0/10) edged Tennessee (2-1/36) on an overturned call in overtime, Texas A&M (3-0/22) won over Notre Dame (0-2/65) on a 4th and goal bit of magic, Vanderbilt (3-0/27) stopped a 16-game losing streak to South Carolina (2-1/80), UCLA (0-3/129) got stopped by New Mexico (2-1/78), N Arizona (2-1/167) and S Utah (1-2/208) scored 73 points in the second half including a holding call in the endzone safety to end the game, Georgia Tech (3-0/25) kicked their way to beat Clemson (1-2/63), Delaware (2-1/104) got its first win over an FBS opponent as a FBS team by taking down UCONN (1-0/107) in overtime, West Virginia (2-1/64) won the Backyard Brawl over Pittsburgh (2-1/64) in overtime, and Stanford got in the win column beating Boston College. There were 117 other games as well.

The ACC is now 4-10 (.286) against non-conference Core 4 opponents this season. The Big 12 is 6-6 (.500), the Big Ten is also even at 5-5 (.500), Notre Dame is 0-2 (.000), and the SEC is 10-2 (.833) on the season.

I compared last week’s Top 265 to this week’s and there is a lot of change happening up and down the ranking. Why would this be? Part of it is teams won or lost their first game of the season this weekend which would stir the pot. Part of it is we had more conference games this week than before which would impact a team’s strength of schedule (SOS). Part of it is the denominator is becoming incrementally larger which, eventually, stabilizes the scores. After three weeks, a team’s opponent’s SOS starts to differentiate. Let’s look at two cases as a comparison. Vanderbilt (3-0/27) beat Charleston So (0-3/235) and Virginia Tech (0-3/133) in weeks 1 and 2, respectively. The GCR doesn’t look ahead and give teams credit for having a difficult team on the schedule later in the season, but it does always look behind. CHSO was 0-0 when Vandy played them and VT was 0-1, but they are a combined 0-6 now. Add the South Carolina (2-1/80) and the Commodores’ opponents are just 2-7 (.222) going 0-3 this weekend. The GCR has them playing the 235th easiest schedule so far this season, despite the fact that they’ve played and beaten two Core 4 teams. Indiana (3-0/7), who was blasted for having such a weak out of conference schedule, beat Old Dominion (2-1/52) who just gave Virginia Tech their third loss, second-year FBS school Kennesaw St (1-2/110) and FCS Indiana St (2-1/157). That means the Hoosiers’ opponents are 5-4 (.556) and were 2-1 this weekend. The GCR has their SOS at 106th, despite not playing any Core 4 teams, which is similar to Virginia’s (2-1/41) SOS at 105th. These numbers could change, certainly. Vanderbilt’s first 3 opponents could run the table and end up with a combined 29-7 (.806) record (editorial note: that is not going to happen), and adding their SEC slate coming up, could make their SOS the most difficult. Or they could all end up with losing records. The same applies for Indiana’s opponents. The point is that what the six teams they’ve already played do for the rest of the season will positively or negatively impact their SOS, which will impact their overall score which will impact their ranking.
