G’s Evaluation or Women’s Basketball Top 363 for Week 17!

Welcome back, college sports fans, to episode 598 of the GCR. Episode 500 was just 192 days ago so we are posting every other day on average. Because we are in a new month, look for the Women’s next to last conference comparison tomorrow (Tuesday). Wednesday will be the Men’s Top 365 followed by their own conference comparison on Thursday. We only have 35 more days of college basketball before our champions are crowned. Every. Game. Matters. In addition to the planned posts, we will update the tourney games to watch. In each case, the games to watch are in order of tipoff.

This week in women’s basketball, we have the odd dichotomy of some conferences finishing their regular season and some completing their conference tourneys. Let’s look at some of the big games coming up. To qualify, both teams must have at least 17 wins (1 per week) OR be a tourney game (Conference – Round in parenthesis).

Remember that most of the 31 conferences will only have a single participant in the NCAA Championship – the winner of the conference tourney. The Horizon Play in game (at 8:00pm Eastern today) features two teams with a combined 14-46 record. Neither team SHOULD win the Horizon title, but remember that in 2007-08, Coppin St was 16-21, 7-9 in the MEAC, but won the tourney, becoming the only team with 20 losses to make the show – they lost their first four game 69-60 to St Marys, but they were there.

Each day, we will post a combined women’s and men’s tournament games for the day, after which we look forward to our 4-6 weeks hiatus before we start talking about college football again.

We will publish the Top 363 once again after all of the conference tourneys are complete, but before the post-season tournaments begin. Then we will publish our final ranking following the championship games. We will do the same for the men as well. After the final postings, we will provide the final conference comparisons and call the basketball season officially over.

That’s it for today. Remember, you can add 4.5 to the home team (most tourney games are at neutral sites, so no adjustment) for both the Score and RPIF metrics. Comparing the teams gives you the projected winner as well as the theoretical point differential. If the two metrics disagree on a winner (see UCONN and South Carolina in the table below), the GCR cannot pick a winner. Thank you for reading and sharing with others.
