Welcome back, college football fans, as we get ready for some football this weekend. There are still 34 games with an FBS team playing an FCS opponent as well as 17 FCS schools playing non-Division I foes, so some stinkers (or major upsets) await. That does leave us with 74 decent matchups, 11 of which are Core 4 vs Core 4, so the season is getting more entertaining each week.
…..
So far this season, the GCR predictions are a mixed bag. Straight up we went 71-12 (.855) when an FBS team was involved (although some of those games were against serious cupcakes) and 21-16 (.568) when the FCS was against other FCS. That starts our SU season at a respectable 92-28 (.767). Against the spread, we suffered a good bit at 23-27 (.460) which is not anywhere we’d like to be. I’m not surprised because we don’t have enough data to truly differentiate very good from good from marginally good from average, etc. I expect those numbers to improve by the end of September.
…..
Tonight, we have just a single game with a 7:30 (all times Eastern) kickoff when NC St (2-0/4) invades Wake Forest (2-0/81). Last week, NCST took down Virginia (1-1/20) in that weird non-conference game between two teams in the same conference, so I guess this is the official first ACC/ACC game of the season. They also beat East Carolina (1-1/90) in week 1, but the two wins came with a combined 11 points. The Demon Deacons edged Kennesaw St (0-2/98) by 1, then beat FCS opponent W Carolina (0-2/253) 42-10. When the Wolfpack, they have an Offensive Efficiency Rating (OER) of 171 (good for 9th in the country). OER is a GCR rating which compares team scoring to opponent’s points allowed. If a team’s opponents each gave up 20 points per game, on average, and “your” team scored 20 points against each of those teams, “your” OER would be 100, or average. NCST’s 171 means that they score 17.1 points for every 10.0 points their opponents normally allow. That offensive production will be challenged by Wake Forest’s Defensive Efficiency Rating (DER) of 192 (28th) which means that they only give up 10.0 points for every 19.2 their opponents score on average. When WAKE is on offense, their OER is 65 (213th), which is significantly below average while the Wolfpack’s DER is 158 (51st). Vegas sees NCST winning this game -7.0, but the GCR sees these teams as almost even in its algorithm so the home field advantage will determine the winner – WF 53% and to cover in the upset. You can watch the game on ESPN.
…..
The Big 12 takes over Friday night and I am torn between which game is bigger. At 7:30, we have Colorado (1-1/42) at Houston (2-0/36) on ESPN. Then, at 9:00 on FOX, Kansas St (1-2/82) travels to Arizona (2-0/38) trying to salvage their season. Colorado enters with an OER of 128 (64th) against a Cougar DER of 239 (15th) while the reverse has Houston’s OER of 122 (82nd) against a Buffalo DER of 188 (30th). Vegas likes HOU-4.5 and the GCR agrees 80% and to cover. Kansas St was in the preseason AP top 25 (reason #528 not to have a preseason poll) but have losses to Iowa St (3-0/27) and Army (1-1/77). Army lost to FCS opponent Tarleton (3-0/130) in overtime week 1 but bounced back to beat a Core 4 team. This is why I love college sports, by the way. When the Wildcats from Kansas are on offense, their OER is 117 (91st) and will face a Wildcat from Arizona DER of 317 (7th). Arizona’s OER of 120 (86th) will take on KSST’s DER of 120 (91st). What’s odd is that Vegas originally had Arizona winning by a field goal but have switched to KSST-1.0. The GCR disagrees vehemently with ARIZ winning 86% of the time and covering.
…..
The early Saturday game to watch takes us to Tuscaloosa when Wisconsin (2-0/49) tries to put the nail in the Alabama (1-1/26) season, kicking off at noon on some ESPN channel (TBD). The Crimson Tide bounced back from an opening week loss to Florida St (2-0/44) before blanking ULM (1-1/128) 73-0. Wisconsin (241st most difficult schedule so far this season) hasn’t been challenged yet, so much so that neither of its opponents have won a game yet – Miami OH (0-2/117) and Middle Tennessee (0-2/141) who also lost to FCS Austin Peay (1-1/121). The Badgers OER is below average at 86 (165th) and will face a Tide DER of 221 (20th). When Alabama has the ball, they bring an OER of 194 (1st) against a Wisconsin DER of 205 (24th). Vegas has ALA-20.5 and the GCR agrees 75% to win and to cover. Also keep an eye out on Vanderbilt (2-0/53) at South Carolina (2-0/62). The Gamecocks special teams and defense have scored 4 TDs so far this season and have only given up 1. Vanderbilt woke up in the second half against Virginia Tech (0-2/97) last week and beat them by more than SCAR did in week 1. SCAR has won 16 in a row in this series and playing at Williams-Brice is tough for any team. Bold prediction: the winner of this game will be in the discussion for the SEC championship and a playoff spot. The Gamecocks opened -6.5 but that has dwindled to -4.0. The GCR has Vanderbilt to end the drought. If SCAR’s offense catches up to its defense, the streak continues. Who would have thought this game would be so important in this conference? It will be on a TBD ESPN Network at 1:00. Also, watch Clemson (1-1/39) at Georgia Tech (2-0/22) at 12:00 on a TBD ESPN Network. Vegas had Clemson -4.5 but that’s dropped to a field goal. The Tigers are known for avoiding the transfer portal as much as possible and were praised for it in the preseason as an AP Top 5 team (again with the preseason poll). A loss at home to LSU (2-0/9) and a struggle against Troy (1-1/104) the next week has put this program to the question. The Yellow Jackets opened on the road at Colorado (1-1/42) and won their FCS game by 47. One team has proven itself so far; the other has a lot of question marks. Look for Georgia Tech to win the game.
…..
Our afternoon game, and game of the week, is Georgia (2-0/24) at Tennessee (2-0/12) at 3:30 on ABC. The Bulldogs OER of 135 (49th) will face a Volunteer DER of 134 (73rd) while the TENN OER of 152 (22nd) goes against a GEO DER of 258 (12th). These teams are fairly evenly matched, and I suspect it will be a 4th quarter game. Vegas likes GEO-3.5, but the GCR likes the consistency of the Tennessee offense and home field advantage to give TENN a 54% chance to win and cover. I’m also going to keep an eye on the Southern Cal (2-0/7) vs Purdue (2-0/57) game at 3:30 on CBS. Purdue’s SOS is just 246th, but they’ve beat those opponents by 31 and 17. Southern Cal tromped a Missouri St (1-1/94) team in its first season as an FBS team and really bad Ga Southern (0-2/109) who also lost to Fresno St (2-1/71) by 28. Vegas has SCAL-20.5, but the GCR only has them winning this game 56% of the time. Look for Purdue to cover the spread. Another team to think about to cover in a loss is upstart South Florida (2-0/13) who have already beaten Boise St (1-1/111) and Florida (1-1/75) and now face Miami FL (2-0/67). The game is at 4:30 on The CW with MIAF-17.5. The GCR does have the Hurricanes winning 64% of the time, but SFLA should keep it a good deal closer.
…..
Our night game, starting at 10:30 on ESPN features Minnesota (2-0/30) at California (2-0/46). So far this season the ACC is 0-2 vs the Big Ten and 3-9 (.250) against non-conference Core 4 opponents giving the most such games played but the lowest winning percentage. As a reference the next worst is the Big 12 (5-6/.455), then the Big Ten (5-3/.675) who have the fewest such games played, and the SEC (8-2/.800) leading the way. Notre Dame (0-1/60) has only played one game and lost to Miami FL. The Golden Gophers OER of 170 (10th) will face a Golden Bears DER of 183 (34th). When CAL is on the offensive their OER of 109 (110th) will face a juggernaut MINN DER of 375 (4th). Vegas has MINN-2.5, but in the upset of the week, look for CAL to win 59% of the time and to cover.
…..
There is just a single FCS game featuring undefeated teams when, at 7:00 on ESPN+, Drake (1-0/168) takes on South Dakota St (2-0/163) in Brookings, SD. Drake is coming off a bye week to fight the behemoth. There is no line for the game, but I think it could be fairly close with SDKS winning 57%.
…..
Those are the highlights, but there are 125 games this weekend. Thank you for reading and as always for sharing with others, JoJo and G.
