Welcome back, college football fans, to the latest episode of the GCR. The entire experience from determining how to calculate strength of schedule (SOS) and performance scores to the initial rankings of just certain conferences – only those that were bowl eligible at first but expanded to all Division I now – has led us to today. Not only are we excited as always with our latest predictions and games to watch, but the pre-season work on Men’s and Women’s College Basketball has begun in earnest. Last season, we brought you the beta version which was tested through the first two months of the season and published, live and dangerous, as the conference schedules picked up in January. This season, we are planning to have simultaneous CFB, MBB, and WBB every week starting in November. That’s more posts, more sports, more college, and, we humbly hope, more fun. We don’t currently have all of the preseason hype for basketball that we do for football, but the programs are being improved daily – maybe we’ll be ready for that next year. One issue is not all conferences and/or teams have completed their schedules yet – meaning that a similar pre-season SOS conference rank would not be complete. Certainly, there are football teams with last minute schedule changes, but it seems to be more prevalent in basketball. Who knows? Maybe we will find a different tack for bball. As a reminder, on some terms. Core 4 means teams in the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, SEC, and Notre Dame. Group of 5 means teams in the American (AAC), Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, Pac-12, Sun Belt, and UCONN. Those two groups make up the FBS or Football Bowl Series. Other conferences in Division I make up the FCS or Football Championship Series (Big Sky, Big South/Ohio Valley, Coastal Athletic Conference or CAA, Ivy, MEAC, Missouri Valley Football Conference, Northeast, Patriot, Pioneer, Southern or SoCon, Southland, SWAC, UAC, and the two FCS independent teams).

Last week, the GCR picked the winner of 61 games in which at least one FBS team. With a record of 43-18 (.705) in those games, our season totals are now 158-46 (.775). We also picked 36 games in which two FCS teams played each other going 26-10 (.722) bringing the season to 72-39 (.648). Our overall straight up (just picking the winner), then, was 69-28 (.711) last week and 240-85 (.738) overall. Against the spread, the GCR was 19-17 (.528) to bring the season to 70-63 (.526).

Tonight, there is but a single game when Army (1-2/96) invades East Carolina (2-2/64) at 7:30 (all times Eastern) on ESPN. The Black Knights have had an odd season with a week 1 home loss to FCS powerhouse Tarleton (5-0/128) before a road win at Kansas St (1-3/92) before another home loss in overtime against North Texas (4-0/36). They’ve played the 18th most difficult schedule so far this season. East Carolina lost by a touchdown at NC St (3-1/29) before securing a home win against FCS Campbell (1-3/209) before pitching a shutout on the teal field at Coastal Car (2-2/101). When Army has the ball, they bring an Offensive Efficiency Rating (OER) of 151 which is 27th in the country. That means that they score 15.1 points for every 10.0 points their opponents allow on average. They will face a Pirate Defensive Efficiency Rating (DER) of 186 (26th), aided by that shutout. That means that East Carolina gives up 10.0 points for every 18.6 their opponents normally score. This matchup is strength on strength. On the flip side, an ECAR OER of 122 (84th) will do battle with the Army DER of 124 (85th). While not at the same national levels, this matchup is pretty even as well. This should be a good and challenging game for both teams. Vegas likes ECAR-4.5 and the GCR agrees with the Pirates winning 62% of the time and to cover the spread.

There are two good matchups Friday night as well as Florida St (3-0/30) heads to Virginia (3-1/32) at 7:00 on ESPN (FSU to win, VIR to cover) and TCU (3-0/4) at Arizona St (3-1/24) at 9:00 on Fox (TCU to upset and cover).

The game to watch at the noon Saturday slot is Southern Cal (4-0/1) at Illinois (3-1/38). Illinois just got stomped by Indiana 63-10 and will need to rebound or be relegated to the forgotten before September is completed. When the Trojans are on offense, they bring a high-powered OER of 167 (14th) and will face a depleted Illini DER of 146 (53rd). Illinois will use its OER of 130 (62nd) to try to stay with SCAL’s DER of 140 (60th). Be cautioned that despite last week’s results and this week’s Southern Cal GCR #1 spot, this is not a game to overlook. Vegas likes SCAL-6.5 and the GCR agrees at 64% to win. They will cover but look for a close game until the second half, if Illinois has any spirit left at all.

Take your pick at the 3:30 time slot – Ohio St (3-0/13) at Washington (3-0/7), LSU (4-0/34) at Mississippi (4-0/5), Auburn (3-1/35) at Texas A&M (3-0/14), Indiana (4-0/2) at Iowa (3-1/39). The predictions are in the table below, but the message is this is an unbelievable slate of games all at the same time. Rest assured, those of us at GCR HQ will be absolutely drooling. How many TVs/devices can I fit in one room?
