G’s Expectation or Day 3 of the Madness That Is March

Welcome back, college sports fans. Yesterday, we had 12 games (10 men, 2 women) as part of the ramp up to today’s full schedule (46 games). With 12 games we had 12 winners moving forward and 12 teams that are done for the season – lose and go home. That leaves us with 214 (126 women, 88 men) remaining teams in the six tournaments – 208 more will lose their last game of the season.

…..

For the women, the GCR only predicted one of the two games and we were wrong. That loss brings us to 112-43 (.723) this postseason. Today is trying to make up for the pitiful 2-game schedule yesterday with 30 games across all 3 women’s tournaments. As a reminder, the NCAA (68 teams) is top dog, followed by the WBIT (32 teams) who gets second picks, then the NIT (48 teams) get third choice. All teams in the NCAA are seeded, 50% of the teams are seeded in the WBIT, and none are in the NIT. All women’s conferences have at least 2 teams remaining across all tournaments. In the table below, NCAA/FF means First Four games. The records/GCR rank are current through yesterday’s games. The Conf and Seeds columns are listed in the same order as the teams are listed in the Games column. In the Seeds column, a U indicates an unseeded team. The NCAA First Four games only have one seed listed, e.g., 16-PI, because both teams are seeded 16 and it’s a play in game. If the GCR’s two predictor metrics, Score and RPIF, agree on the projected winner, we list that team in the Pred column – note, games played on a home court have the 4.5 home court advantage included. If the two metrics disagree, we cannot predict and post NPre. Here are the women’s game today in time order (all times Eastern).

…..

For the men, Madness continues with the GCR going 5-4 (.556) while being almost completely in line with the Vegas favorite. It’s March – this is what happens. All 16 games today are NCAA Round 1 games. No NIT today. The College Basketball Crown tournament doesn’t start until April 1, so it’s all The Show today. One of the best parts of the NCAAs is all teams are seeded. The Conf and Seeds columns list data in the same order as the Games column. If the Score and RPIF metrics agree on a predicted winner, we post that team in Pred, but if they disagree, we cannot predict and post NPre. The games span all 4 regions and are listed in tipoff order, all times Eastern. Here are the first half of Round 1.
