Welcome back sports fans as we near the end of the college football regular season. This week is FCS Rivalry week and there are some really important games to talk about.

First, last week, the GCR was 46-13 (.780) picking the winner in games including at least one FBS team raising the season to an acceptable 465-176 (.725). In FCS vs FCS games, the algorithm picked the winner 52 times out of 63 (.825) bringing that season metric to 388-145 (.728). For all games, the GCR was 98-24 (.803) for season total of 853-321 (.727). It was a rough week against the spread as I talked about in the Sunday’s Evaluation. After a horrible 6-15 start, we ended up 26-32 (.448) in FBS vs FBS considering the Vegas spread. Overall for the year, we are still above .500 but an anemic 287-275 (.513).

With one week to play, we looked at each FCS conference and the championship scenarios. Let’s start with the single non-post season conference: the Ivy League. Harvard (9-0/129) is 6-0 in the conference and are playing Yale (7-2/140) who is 5-1. No other team is within reach, so the winner of this big rivalry will win the Ivy League title.

Now for the Celebration Bowl conferences. The SWAC and the MEAC do not participate in the FCS playoffs, but their champions play in the only FCS bowl game in early December. Both at 4-0 in the MEAC, Delaware St (8-3/181) hosts South Carolina St (8-3/194) for a place in the Celebration Bowl. Winner takes all. The SWAC is the only FCS conference with divisions and will have a championship to decide who will face the MEAC champion. The West division is already locked up by Prairie View (8-3/176). They will face either Jackson St (8-2/151) if they beat Alcorn St (5-6/227) or Alabama St (8-2/148) if they beat Ark Pine Bluff (4-7/238) and Jackson St loses.

The Big Sky has two teams that are 7-0 in conference play, and, thankfully, they play each other Saturday. The winner of the Montana (11-0/141) and Montana St (9-2/138) wins the title.

Tennessee Tech (10-1/147) has already clinched the Big South/Ohio Valley conference.

The Coastal (used to be the Colonial) has 3 teams that can still win. Villanova (8-2/161) has finished conference play at 7-1, but Rhode Island (9-2/145) is 7-0 and facing Hampton (2-9/258). A win gives the Rams the title. Also in play is Monmouth (9-2/153) who is 6-1 and facing Albany (1-10/251). RISL did not play either of the other two teams and Monmouth bested Villanova. If all 3 finish 7-1, we would assume Villanova is out due to that loss and some deeper tie breaker would come into play. The same tie breaker would be needed if Monmouth and Rhode Island both lose.

The Missouri Valley Football Conference has been clinched by North Dakota St (11-0/143).

The Northeast conference has a potential 4-way tie that is a mess. C Connecticut (7-4/180) is in first at 5-1 in conference and plays Mercyhurst (5-6/212) who are 4-2 in conference play. An upset puts both at 5-2. But wait, there’s more. Wagner (5-6/244) and Duquesne (6-5/200) are both 4-2. We wrote all the scenarios down and it basically comes to this. C Connecticut wins and they are the NEC Champion. If they lose and Duquesne wins, regardless of what anyone else does, and Duquesne wins. If both lose, we think Mercyhurst is next in line.

The Patriot League is home to the longest rivalry in college football. Lehigh (11-0/134) and Lafayette (8-3/198) meet for the 161st time and are both 6-0 in conference play. The winner not only gets bragging rights, but also the title.

The Pioneer League has Drake (7-3/159) in first place at 6-1. Waiting in the wings are Presbyterian (9-2/146) and San Diego (7-4/162) at 5-2 in conference. We think a 3-way tie benefits Drake with a win over San Diego, but it could lead to the same scenario as a two-way tie between Drake and PC. We do not see a scenario where San Diego wins the conference.

The Southland Conference has two teams in the hunt. Steph F Austin (9-2/152) is 7-0 and Southeastern (8-3/169) is 6-1. They did not play each other so an SFA win clinches, and a tie between these two goes into deeper tie-breaker scenarios.

Finally, the United Athletic Conference has a two-way tie between Abilene Chr (7-4/164) and Tarleton (10-1/133) with both 6-1 in conference play. Sadly for Tarleton, their only loss was to Abilene, so if ABCH wins, or if both teams lose, they win the title. If ABCH loses and Tarleton wins, they win the title.
