Welcome back, college sports fans, to the latest episode of the GCR where we will be looking at the best games over the weekend. Honestly, it’s normally a bit more difficult to write an Expectation, trying to narrow down which games are really the cream of the crop or the most important. Normally, I don’t use the AP poll, but it does help drive a point home. Seven of the Top 25 from that poll are playing FCS cupcakes this weekend (#1 Ohio St vs Grambling St, #4 Georgia vs Austin Peay, #5 Miami FL vs Bethune, #10 South Carolina vs South Carolina St, #14 Florida St vs East Texas, #22 Tennessee vs E Tennessee St, and #25 Utah vs Cal Poly). Six more are playing unranked Core 4 teams (#6 Oregon vs Oklahoma St, #11 Illinois at Duke, #12 Arizona St at Mississippi St, #16 Iowa St at Iowa, #17 SMU vs Baylor, and #20 Mississippi at Kentucky). Notre Dame is idle, and nine teams are playing Group of 5 opponents. There is but a single game between two AP Top 25 teams, which means we have a natural Game of the Week.

Before we get there, I do want to address a question that has come up. Some readers have noticed teams like Pittsburgh who is 1-0 but ranked 107 despite beating Duquesne 61-9 (or Illinois who is ranked 104 after beating W Illinois 52-3) and wondered why. First, there’s nothing to worry about. Teams like these 2 did win big and got bonuses for that, but they faced FCS opponents who were blown out (by them) and have a very low performance score, negatively impacting the winning team’s SOS score substantially. All of this evens out as more games are played, but early in the season, we should expect a little weirdness. Thanks for the questions: keep them coming!

There are a total of four games tonight one that really stands out. First at 7:00 (all times Eastern) on ESPN2, James Madison (1-0/101) heading to Louisville (1-0/81) both coming off big week 1 wins. The Sun Belt has a history of pulling of a couple of upsets over Core 4 teams each year, and this one should be fun to watch. Vegas seems to think the Cardinals have this under control at -14.5, but the GCR sees it as a closer matchup with LOU winning just 56% percent of the time and James Madison covering.

We move to the Big Ten for our early Saturday game, at noon on Fox, when Iowa (1-0/96) invades Iowa St (2-0/19) in the annual early rivalry game. Just like the Iowa caucus in first in the nation, this is the first rivalry game in the country. State has already taken down conference foe Kansas St (1-1/47) in the Dublin, Ireland game to kick off the season. Both teams took care of business in Week 1 over overmatched teams. This will be the 72nd meeting since 1894 with the Hawkeyes owning a significant advantage 47-24 (.662) including a 15-game winning streak from 1983-1997. The tide may be turning as Vegas has Iowa St to win their second straight in the series -3.5. The GCR agrees IAST to win 57% and to cover.

Our 3:30 game, on ABC, will feature one of the biggest upsets from a year ago when Mississippi (1-0/6) heads to Lexington to play Kentucky (1-0/49). Last season, the then 2-2 Wildcats invaded Oxford and handed the Rebels their first loss of the season. Mississippi ended up 9-3 and just missed the playoffs and Kentucky won just one more game on the way to a disappointing 4-8 season. Ironically, despite Kentucky’s woes of late, Mark Stoops in the longest-tenured SEC coach. His 77 wins (against 73 losses) surpassed Bear Bryant as the winningest coach in program history. Does he have the secret to the high-powered Mississippi offense? Was last year a fluke? The Vegas line started at MISS-10.5 and has dropped to -8.5 at the time of GCR publication. Clearly, some folks have belief in Kentucky. The GCR, however, is not one of them, in this case, as MISS will win 65% and cover the spread (either one of them).

The Game of the Week, with a 7:30 kickoff on ABC, pits Michigan (1-0/25) at Oklahoma (1-0/121). This is the game I referred to earlier. Both took care of lesser foes last week and haven’t been tested this season. Vegas has Oklahoma winning at home -5.0, but in what is the GCR upset of the week Michigan will win 60% of the time and cover.

A call out to Virginia Tech (0-1/55) who lost to South Carolina (1-0/17) last week. Instead of playing an FCS or Group of 5 team after a neutral site game to start the season, they are hosting Vanderbilt (1-0/126). In upset #2, Vegas has the Hokies to win -2.0, expecting the home field advantage will make the difference, while the GCR has the Commodores winning 62% and to cover. The game is at 7:30 on the ACC Network

The best late game is in the Group of 5 arena when Washington St (1-0/73) hosts San Diego St (1-0/126) at 10:15 on The CW. Vegas has WAST-1.5 and the GCR agrees 61% to win and to cover.

The FCS Game of the Week is between two perennial playoff teams when South Dakota St (1-0/194) travels to Bozeman to meet Montana St (0-1/177). MTST lost to Oregon (1-0/103) 59-13 in week 1 but should bounce back. The Jackrabbits took care of Sacramento St 20-3 to kick off the season. At time of publication, there is no line on this game, but the GCR has SDKS to win 58% of the time so something less than a touchdown. The game is at 8:00 on ESPN+.
