Welcome back, oh great and wonderful college football fans, to the main event: Week 1 of the 2025 College Football Season! It’s the time of year that we begin to believe the leaves will eventually change color and the temperature will actually lower and stay that way. It’s the time we congratulate those schools who promoted from the FCS ranks to the Group of 5 (Delaware and Missouri St) and those who joined the FCS ranks from lower divisions (New Haven and Rio Grande). It’s the time we all, either loudly or secretively, think this might be our team’s year.

By Monday night, every team in Division I will have played at least one game except Montana, Villanova, and the Ivy League. Stanford (0-1/7) is the only other team idle this weekend. The games start tonight (Thursday) with Boise St at South Florida with a 5:30 (all times Eastern) kickoff on ESPN. The final game is Monday night (8:00) when TCU invades Bill Belichick’s North Carolina Tar Heels on ESPN. There is only one matchup between teams who both played last Saturday in Week 0: UNLV (1-0/5) travels to Sam Houston (0-1/9) in a Mountain West/Conference USA challenge. Vegas has UNLV to win -9.5 points and the GCR agrees at 64% to win and to cover.

All of the remaining 131 games have at least one team who has not played (0-0/17) and the GCR cannot predict the winner. There are eleven Core 4/Core 4 games that are certainly more exciting than watching the probable blowout against an FCS opponent: Georgia Tech at Colorado, Syracuse vs Tennessee, Alabama at Florida St, LSU at Clemson, Virginia Tech vs South Carolina, Notre Dame at Miami FL, TCU at North Carolina, Nebraska vs Cincinnati, Auburn at Baylor, Utah at UCLA, and Texas at Ohio St. There are also ten Group of 5/Group of 5 games: Boise St at South Florida, App St vs Charlotte, Temple at UMASS, Rice at Louisiana, UNLV at Sam Houston, UTEP at Utah St, Wyoming at Akron, C Michigan at San Jose St, E Michigan at Texas St, and Ga Southern at Fresno St (0-1/8).

For new readers who haven’t been through a full season with us, in a typical G’s Expectation, we talk about the biggest games from a variety of perspectives for each time slot (pre-Saturday, noon, afternoon, evening, and sometimes late-night) followed by a listing of every game. That listing, below, is organized by conference, first Core 4, then Group of 5, then FCS, alphabetically within each grouping, and the game is listed in the first conference available. For example, when an SEC team plays an ACC team, the game will always be listed in the ACC. But I’m aware that not everyone has the teams and their conferences memorized. To help with that, a game not listed “in-conference” such as the example above, will be listed in the OOC (out of conference games) within the conference. That SEC team would be listed in OOC along with who they are playing and what conference they are in so that you can always find your favorite team’s info. I also list any Idle teams within their own conference so that every team is accounted for every week. I list the Vegas odds based on the app I use for all teams. In the Auburn/Baylor game, Vegas favors Auburn by 2.5 points so that column reads AUB-2.5. That game can be found in the Big 12 section. If the Vegas column reads NL, it just means that, at the time of publishing the Expectation, Vegas had not listed odds. If Vegas cannot pick a winner, the table will list pick. The next column is GCR Win which is what the program calculates as a winning percentage – it also acts as a pick for straight up (meaning simply choosing the winner). NP mean there is no prediction because one or both teams either hasn’t played a game yet or the opponent is not Division I. If the GCR calculates the odds to be 50%, I’ll list pick. The next column, named GCR Cover, will either have one of the schools listed (such as Auburn or Baylor) or NP (same reasons as above). The GCR calculates point differential and compares it to the Vegas line to determine which team is listed. I hope all of this will make more sense after more games are played and the table flushes out. As a reminder, all teams began 0 wins, 0 losses, and tied for first. Everything is earned or lost in the GCR calculations.

This year, we’ve added a final column listing the TV channel for each game. We hope you find it helpful. As a reminder, N following a team name indicates a neutral site game and NA after a team name indicates a non-Division I team. We are always open to better ways to share the information and welcome feedback or suggestions. With that we give you the less-than-typical games table for Week 1. We hope you overstuff yourself with football as we plan to do. In a normal week, we publish the rankings on Sunday, but since there are two games Sunday and one on Monday, we’ll post the initial GCR on Tuesday next week.
