Greetings sports fans. As I’m starting this, the early game tonight is about 15 minutes away and I’m reminded of a standing dad joke from my father whenever we went to a ball game. He would say he could give the score of the game 5 minutes before the start. As the countdown clock approached 5:00, he would lean over and say, “see that? zero-zero.” So far this week, the GCR is perfect and all games are 0-0. Last week, I could have only hoped to have done so well, finishing just 70-39 .642. So far this year, the GCR is 59-25 .702. I’m always aiming for that magical 75% correct number so there needs to be some improvement.
…..
This week, I’m adding a new twist in the prediction. I’ve been wanting to do it for years and have tried a number of approaches, none of which worked very well, until now. No, it’s not perfect, but I finally figured out a formula to provide a point spread in addition to the percent to win I’ve used all along. It’s the most common request I’ve had from an enhancement viewpoint. I’ve been watching the numbers all season and they are finally reasonable enough to report. Over the summer, I’ll continue to work to make them available sooner. The first few years I had percent predictions, I couldn’t publish them until after week 4, but finally figured out the solution. All 117 predictions are below, but let’s look at some of the more interesting ones.
…..
There are two games tonight and, although they don’t really qualify for interesting, they are the only 2. Hurricane Ian forced some changes and one of them just kicked off as I’m typing this sentence. South Carolina St (1-2/217) who upset Jackson St in the Celebration Bowl last year invades South Carolina (2-2/77). Last week, the Gamecocks got a much-needed respite (after at Arkansas and hosting Georgia) with a comfortable (at least in the second half) win vs Charlotte. SCAR the last few years have notoriously started slowly and probably will today, but the better athletes should pour it on later in the game. Vegas has SCAR -39.0 and the GCR agrees but not quite as much – SCAR 99%, -36.5. Later tonight (8:00 all times Eastern), Utah St (1-3/104) heads to BYU (3-1/52). BYU is fighting for the New Year’s Six Group of 5 bid and will need to be dominate tonight. Vegas thinks they will win easily -24.0, and the GCR agrees – BYU 85%, -25.5.
…..
Friday there are 5 games, but the one that sticks out the most is UTSA (2-2/124) at Middle Tennessee (3-1/66). The Blue Raiders took out Miami FL last week while last year’s C-USA Cinderella has struggled a bit. Can UTSA find their winning ways? Will Middle Tennessee have a let-down game? Vegas thinks so with UTSA -4.0, but the GCR in upset #1, has MTSU 62%, -9.0. A 13-point swing which is a good test to the formula.
…..
Our early Saturday games start with our FCS game of the week featuring a Colonial matchup with Richmond (3-1/152) at Elon (3-1/156) at 2:00. So far Delaware (4-0/103) is the darling of the conference, but both the Spiders and the Pirates are in the running if the Blue Hens falter. The GCR has Richmond winning on the road 55%, -4.0. In the FBS, at noon, we have the first of 9 must see conference games. Kentucky (4-0/13) travels to Oxford to take on Mississippi (4-0/6) in a powerful East/West showdown in the SEC. Vegas has Mississippi -7.0 while the GCR sees the Rebels as a much bigger favorite 69%, -13.5. Another big test for the GCR. Also at noon, we have a B1G East/West matchup between Michigan (4-0/4) at Iowa (3-1/23). This one is interesting as Michigan has an Offensive Efficiency Rating of 137 good for 39th in the country. OER, as a reminder, is a metric that shows how well an offense does compared to how well other offenses do against the same opponent(s). An OER of 137 means that Michigan scores 13.7 points for every 10 points their opponents normally allow. They will be facing an Iowa defense that has a Defensive Efficiency Rating of 468 good for best in the nation. A DER of 468 means that for every 46.8 points an opponent normally scores, Iowa gives up 10. On the flip side, when Iowa has the ball, they bring an anemic OER of 87 (scoring 8.7 points for every 10 points the opponents normally allow) good for 166th in the nation against a good Michigan defense with a DER of 181, good for 22nd. Vegas thinks Michigan will win pretty big at -11.0, but the GCR thinks the plodding Iowa offense and stout defense will keep in closer – MICH 62%, -8.5. At 2:00 Oregon St (3-1/32) coming off of a loss to Southern Cal invades Utah (3-1/34) in a Pac 12 game. This is one those games that will make or break both of these teams. The winner is relevant in the conference, the loser moves to spoiler role. Vegas sees last year’s champ Utah -10.0 and in a very close estimate, the GCR agrees UTAH 63%, -9.5.
…..
In a remarkably ugly game, South Carolina is up 8-0 with 0:23 in the first quarter.
…..
The afternoon continues the conference games with three 3:30 kickoffs. First, Wake Forest (3-1/27) gets out of Ian’s way at Florida St (4-0/11). Wake just took Clemson to OT before losing and FSU is one of 4 teams in the ACC Atlantic (and the ACC overall) to be 4-0. Did the loss make Wake angry? Which offense will take charge? Wake’s OER is 160 good for 10th while FSU’s OER is 164, seventh. I see a high-scoring affair with FSU taking it 64%, -10.0, which is a little bigger than the Vegas spread, FSU -7.0. At the same time, the Big 12 gets in the mix with Oklahoma St (3-0/19) at Baylor (3-1/26). Baylor lost to BYU early this year and can’t have another loss. OKST is continuing their good work from last year. Here’s an oddity. The only other two undefeated teams in the Big 12 are TCU (3-0/18) and Kansas (4-0/15). The winner of this game is in fine shape to drive for the conference championship. Vegas has BAY -2.0 while, in upset #2, the GCR agrees with -2.0, but has OKST winning the game 52%. Also at the same time, Alabama (4-0/1) travels to Arkansas (3-1/38) who just had a tough 2-pt loss at Texas A&M. Alabama has struggled in road games winning by just one score the past 5 times out. Do the Hogs throw a wrench in the SEC West? We’ve seen stranger this year. Does Alabama get a break-out road victory? Vegas thinks so ALA -17.0. The GCR thinks so even more, ALA 87%, -26.5.
…..
South Carolina drove 95 yards to take a 15-0 lead with 11:40 in the first half against its FCS foe South Carolina St.
…..
The evening games start with a 7:30 game which may be the most important game of the ACC season and the game of the week. NC St (4-0/10) heads to Death Valley East to play Clemson (4-0/12). State has done it with defense (DER of 218 for 11th) while Clemson just puts points on the board (OER of 148 for 22nd). The winner has a huge leg up in the ACC. Clemson is 2-0 in conference, but this is NCST’s opening game. Vegas likes CLEM -6.5, but in upset #3, NCST in a squeaker – 51%, -1.0. Also at 7:30, in a game that won’t matter a whole lot, but is upset #4, Indiana (3-1/41) heads west to Nebraska (1-3/125). The reason I picked this game is that for some reason Vegas likes the Cornhuskers -5.0 when, quite frankly, I don’t think they’ve done anything to warrant being a favorite. GCR has IND 79%, -21.5. In the final game to watch, kicking off at 11:00, Stanford (1-2/57) is heading to Oregon (3-1/25). I picked this one because it’s another where Vegas and the GCR differ by a bit. Not an upset, but Vegas has ORE -17.0 while the GCR agrees but sees a bigger win – ORE 89%, -28.5.
