G’s Expectation or Who Wins in Week

Welcome to another wonderful week of college football! The first game has already started with Bowling Green (4-4/96) taking a 3-0 lead at C Michigan (3-5/132) with 4:13 to go in the first quarter. Any minute now we will get a kickoff as Ball St (3-5/100) hosts Miami OH (4-4/91).

…..

Last week, the tons of upsets wreaked havoc with Texas A&M, Clemson, Penn St (not really an upset), Iowa St, Kansas St, and Pittsburgh all losing. The GCR picked 49 FBS games as was just 29-20 (.592) lowering the season to 240-142 (.628). The 58 FCS games were a little better at 36-22 (.621) bringing the season to 234-127 (.648). Overall picking the winners the GCR was 65-42 (.607) for a YTD 474-269 (.638). When considering the Vegas spread, the GCR had another losing week, but showed improvement at 23-25 (.479). For the year, still barely above water at 159-156 (.505). While these numbers are disappointing and not what I hoped for this season, it is true that I very nearly changed how predictions worked. I post a prediction for every game (except FCS vs non-Division I teams) and predict winners against the spread for all FBS/FBS games. Honestly, I don’t always support what the algorithm picks, but I publish them anyway. I toyed with the idea of choosing more carefully which (possibly) would improve the percentages, but as I’ve always said, I don’t bet on teenagers because they don’t always behave as expected. This blog (3 years) and the GCR (12 years) have been an important part of my life (which often gets eye rolls from my wife as I work on it almost every night during the season), but the reality is, it’s designed to be fun and stimulate discussion. I’ve been asked numerous times about finding a way to monetize the blog or how many followers I have. The first answer is a solid no, not what I want to do. The second is, and I mean this in the most positive possible way, I am indifferent. Even if I stopped posting (which I am not planning to do any time soon), I’d still run the GCR. It’s a labor of love. My daughter, who is majoring in math (WAY smarter than I am), may help me improve it one of these days. Or not.

…..

Bowling Green is now up 6-0 with 6:31 in the half while Miami OH/Ball St are knotted up at 7 with 3:10 in the first.

…..

With no offense to 22 teams playing before Saturday, there is no really intriguing one to write too much about. Maybe App St (4-4/101) at Coastal Carolina (4-4/110) would have been game to watch before both teams had disappointing starts. Iowa (6-3/25) at UCLA (3-5/33), with UCLA playing the most difficult schedule this season (opponents have a .725 winning pct) is probably what I’ll listen to on my way home from the airport Friday night. California (4-4/64) still looking for their first ACC victory at Wake Forest (4-4/78) could be a decent contest.

…..

Ball St now has the lead 10-7 with 13:28 in the half. Bowling Green is in the red zone with 3:28 in the half.

…..

The early games on Saturday are similar Navy (6-2/55) trying to stop a losing streak at South Florida (4-4/90). Miami FL (9-0/4) trying to stay perfect and on top of the ACC at Georgia Tech (5-4/57) who is coming off a bye week. However, Northeast Conference foes Robert Morris (6-3/171) at Duquesne (6-2/155), both of whom are 4-0 in the conference with an automatic bid in the FCS playoff gets the nod. With a noon (all times Eastern) kickoff, the winner has the inside track. When Robert Morris has the ball, they bring an Offensive Efficiency Rating (OER) of just 83 (195th in the country). That means they score 8.3 points for every 10 points their opponents normally allow. They will face a Dukes DER (Defensive) of 72 (246th) which means they give up 10 points for every 7.2 their opponents normally score. Duquesne has earned an OER of 102 (126th) and will butt heads with a Colonials DER of 117 (79th). Robert Morris rarely has a good season and the GCR thinks the magic will be over: Duquesne 57%.

…..

Bowling Green added another FG and is up 9-0 at the 2:00 time out first half. Miami OH is driving and in the red zone down 10-7 with 10:19 in the half.

…..

Clemson (6-2/24), coming off of a bad home loss, at Virginia Tech (5-4/42) is interesting. Michigan (5-4/38) will try to keep Indiana (9-0/1) from winning 10 for the first time ever. While Georgia (7-1/12) at Mississippi (7-2/16) has more impact on the playoffs, as a college football fan, I cannot overlook the other mid-afternoon SEC game. At 4:15, South Carolina (5-3/35) invades Vanderbilt (6-3/53) for this week’s Game of the Week. Please raise your hand if you thought this was going to be an impactful game at the beginning of the season. No one? Nope, I didn’t either. Vanderbilt has beaten both Alabama (then AP #1) and Auburn (first win at Jordan Hare ever) in the same season since 1955. They have wins against Virginia Tech and Kentucky (3-6/75) while holding close to Texas (7-1/6) and Missouri (6-2/27), barely hanging on against Ball St (3-5/100) and losing to Georgia St (2-6/120). Their strength of schedule (SOS) is just 74th in the nation with an opponents’ winning pct of .513. But they are 3-2 in the SEC and that’s not a place they are used to being. The Gamecocks are coming off of their 2nd best performance against an AP top 10 team in their history and are a game away from bowl eligibility. Blown out by Mississippi 27-3, their other two losses came against LSU (6-2/22) 36-33 when a pick six was called back due to a questionable personal foul, and at Alabama 27-25. 7 points keep them from being 7-1. Since Alabama they beat Oklahoma (5-4/45) and A&M by a combined 79-29. Their defensive front is truly elite. I did not have this game circled pre-season, but I can’t wait to see it. When the Commodores are driving, an OER of 130 (38th) take on a strong South Carolina DER of 154 (21st). When the Gamecocks are pushing, an OER of 136 (29th) take on a Vandy DER of 130 (46th). I’m glad Vandy has the bowl game locked up because the rest of the season is tough starting Saturday. Vegas has South Carolina -3.5 and the GCR agrees SCAR 55% and to cover.

…..

C Michigan’s 2-minute drill worked perfectly and gained the momentum although down 9-7 at the half. Miami OH is up 14-13 with 1:56 in the half.

…..

At night, Alabama (6-2/15) at LSU (6-2/22) is another potential high bowl (probably not the playoff) impacting game. BYU (8-0/3) picked by the media to come in last in the Big 12 is at Utah (4-4/58) picked by the media to win the Big 12, and will go for 9-0. How will Pittsburgh (7-1/14) rebound hosting Virginia (4-4/72)? The evening game has got to be the 8:00 bout when Penn St (7-1/13) coming off a close loss to Ohio St (7-1/5) hosts Washington (5-4/41). Penn St brings an OER of 122 (63rd) and will face a Huskie DER of 157 (19th). Hmmm, could be hard to score. On the flip side, a Washington OER of 104 (116th) will face the Nittany Lion DER of 176 (10th). Hmmm, could be hard to score. This should be a low-scoring game. Vegas has Penn St-13.0 and the GCR sees PSU winning 62% of the time, but that’s too many points: Washington will cover.

…..

Both games at the half. Miami OH padded their lead to 21-13.

…..

There were 21 teams with 5 wins and a win away from bowl eligibility last week and 12 of them won. Congratulations to Arizona St, Colorado St, Ga Southern, Iowa, Louisville, Minnesota, Syracuse, Texas Tech, Toledo, UCONN, Vanderbilt, and W Kentucky. There are now 54 eligible teams. There were also 11 teams with 6 losses facing bowl elimination. 7 of them fell. Better luck next year to Akron, Air Force, Kennesaw St (not eligible anyway as a first year FBS team, but officially), Nevada, Purdue, Stanford, and UMASS. 14 total teams have now been eliminated.

…..

With no further ado, here is every game for the week. Thank you for reading and sharing with others, G.
