Welcome back to a new week of college football and a new list of predictions. The season is early and the GCR tends to take a few weeks to ramp up. Last week, the FBS games predictions straight up went 37-15 (.712) which is edging towards that 75% I’d like to hit. FCS games SU were 33-19 (.635) which was just bad. Overall, picking the winner was 70-34 (.673). Hopefully, this week is better. Against the spread (FBS games only), I went 29-23 (.558) which is under the .580 I’d like to hit. If we ignored the horrible 1-6 (.167) against the Big Ten, a 28-17 (.622) for everybody else was respectable.

For the year, the FBS picks for the winners are 139-80 (.635), but improving. FCS games are 127-69 (.648) which makes all picks 266-149 (.641). Trend is up so fingers crossed. Against the spread, the GCR is now 83-70 (.542).

As I’m typing this, 2 of the 3 games tonight have already started. Troy (1-5/119) is at South Alabama (2-4/123) and losing 3-0 with 12:17 to go in the half. Middle Tennessee (1-5/117) is hosting Kennesaw St (0-5/150) and is losing 2-0 after a safety (MTSU has -2 yards on 2 carries so far) with 7:14 to go in the first.

There are 12 games pre-Saturday this week and the one I’m most interested in plays on Wednesday at 7:00 (all times Eastern) with W Kentucky (4-2/67) invades Sam Houston (5-1/42). Last year in their first year in the FBS, Sam Houston was just awful. This year, they are one of 4 teams undefeated in Conference USA play, along with Jacksonville St, Liberty, and these WKY Hilltoppers. W Kentucky has one of the strangest mascots in the country with the red blob sort of thing and when they are on offense, the bring an OER (offensive efficiency rating) of 106 (108th in the country). That is really mediocre and means they score 10.6 points for every 10.0 points their opponents normally allow. They will face a Bearkat DER (defensive) of a not-too-different 105 (118th) meaning they give up 10.0 points for every 10.5 points their opponents normally score. On the flip side, a SHOU OER of 115 (83rd) will go up against a Hilltopper DER of 109 (107th). Vegas has Sam Houston-2.5 and the GCR agrees at 57% and to cover.

South Alabama has exploded going up 19-0 with 4:34 to go in the half. Both games tonight have a safety so that’s kind of cool. Middle Tennessee now up 7-2 with 11:41 in the half.

The early Saturday slate has some really fun looking games, but the highlight is from the Sun Belt when Louisiana (5-1/48) kicks off on the teal field at Coastal Carolina (4-2/80). With James Madison losing to ULM and App St having a really off year, Ga Southern is the sole leader in the Sun Belt East division. Coastal needs the victory to have a chance at the championship game. ULM and Texas St join the Ragin’ Cajuns as undefeated in the conference in the west division. This game is important to both teams. When LAU is driving, they bring an OER of 108 (103rd) against a Chanticleer DER of 97 (149th). But CCAR brings an OER of 128 (52nd) and will face a Cajun DER of 115 (91st). Vegas likes LAU-4.5 and the GCR thinks they will win, but Coastal will cover.

The mid-afternoon game has got to be Michigan (4-2/46) at Illinois (5-1/22). Both teams are ranked in the AP poll, but Illinois looks to have a step up in the GCR. With a 3:30 kickoff, Michigan brings an OER of 118 (77th) and will face an Illini DER of 133 (57th). Illinois pushes an OER of 122 (70th) against a Wolverine 127 (65th). Honestly, I don’t see a path for Illinois to be in the Big Ten championship, but the playoffs are still possible. Vegas has MICH-3.0 but the GCR has ILL at 56% and to cover.

The co-game of the week with a 7:30 kickoff is Georgia (5-1/17) at Texas (6-0/1). Both are in the top 5 in the AP. When the Bulldogs are driving, they have a potent OER of 144 (23rd) but will face a Texas DER of 379 (1st). That means Texas gives up 10.0 points for every 37.9 their opponents normally allow. When the Longhorns are driving, an OER of 167 (3rd) faces a Georgia DER of 177 (13th). Texas is the only team with OER and DER in the top 3. Vegas has a close game in Austin with Texas-3.5. The GCR agrees with the Longhorns at 57%, but they will cover.

Troy hit a field goal just before the half and is now losing 19-3 to South Alabama. Middle Tennessee still up 7-2 over Kennesaw St with 2:24 in the half. LA Tech at New Mexico St has kicked off with no score (11:59 in the first).

The other co-game of the week with an 8:00 kickoff is between perennial FCS behemoths when South Dakota St (5-1/127) invades North Dakota St (6-1/126). Both losses were to FBS teams. They, along with South Dakota, who is the highest ranked Missouri Valley Conference team at 114th, and Missouri St, are undefeated in arguably the best FCS conference (the Big Sky would like to have a discussion about that). When the Jackrabbits are on offense, they bring an OER of 138 (38th) to the table vs a NDST DER of 151 (32nd). When the Bison are stampeding, an OER of 142 (27th) takes on a SDKS DER of 178 (12th). Vegas has no line yet, but the GCR has South Dakota St winning on the road 53%.
