Welcome back to a late G’s Expectation. I wanted to post this on Wednesday night, but there were too many things to do to get ready for my second hip replacement on Thursday morning. I wanted to post Thursday night, but I’m assuming anyone reading this would not want the drug-addled post it would have been. That said, Rice beat Charlotte last night 28-17 in AAC action. The Vegas line was RICE-1.5 and the GCR picked them to win and cover. Right now, the Ivy League is joining the college football action and Columbia (0-0/199) is losing to Lafayette (2-1/141) of the Patriot League, 10-7 at the end of the first quarter. I don’t have a Vegas line for this game and the GCR does not predict games in which one of the teams hasn’t played.

Last week, the GCR was 54-16 (.771) in picking the winner for games involving an FBS school bringing the season total to 115-28 (.804). In games featuring two FCS teams, we were 25-13 (.658) making the season totals 46-29 (.613). That means that all games straight up we were 79-29 (.731) and 171-57 (.750) for the season. In games against the Vegas spread, which will only be FBS vs FBS games, we improved to 28-19 (.596) to pull us above .500 for the season at 51-46 (.526).

Our game to watch pre-Saturday is tonight at 8:00 (all times Eastern) on Fox. Iowa (2-1/60) heads to Rutgers (3-0/53) in the Big Ten season debut for both teams. Once again, Iowa is a defensive team with an Offensive Efficiency Rating (OER) of 111 (96th out of 265 in the country). A score of 111 means they score 11.1 points against their opponents for every 10.0 points are scored against them on average. They will fight a Scarlet Knight Defensive Efficiency Rating (DER) of 77 (217th) which could jumpstart the Hawkeye scoring machine. A DER of 77 means that they give up 10.0 points for every 7.7 points normally scored. When Rutgers has the ball, they bring an OER of 143 (49th) and will face an elite Hawkeye DER of 209 (17th). Vegas has IOWA-2.5, but the GCR sees Rutgers taking this game at home 65% and to cover.

The noon game, which will be at 10:00am local time, features Texas Tech (3-0/33) at Utah (3-0/8) also on Fox. Both teams are ranked (17th and 16th, respectively) in the AP poll. When the Red Raiders have the ball, they bring an explosive OER of 153 (27th) and will face a stingy Utah DER of 261 (11th.) When the Utes are driving, a top ten OER of 176 (8th) will deal with a 125 (84th). Vegas likes UTAH-3.5 and the GCR agrees 58% and to cover.

At 3:30, on ABC, we have Auburn (3-0/5) at Oklahoma (3-0/3) in the GCR game of the week. Both teams are pushing for improvement over last season, and this could show which team (if any or both) have the goods. When the War Tigers have the pigskin, they bring an OER of 120 (77th) and will face a brutal Oklahoma DER of 519 (2nd). On the flip side a Sooner OER of 167 (13th) will try to push through an Auburn DER of 187 (31st). By those numbers, it looks like Oklahoma should win easily and Vegas agrees OKLA-6.5, but wait just a minute, because the GCR has Auburn to win 51% of the time and to cover. This type of scenario happened a couple of times last week and I felt weird posting it, but more often than not, the GCR picked the winner and the spread in those games. So, this is also the upset of the week.

The night game to watch, with a 7:30 kickoff on NBC, features Illinois (3-0/24) at Indiana (3-0/7). When the Illini are driving, they bring an OER of 129 (60th) against a Hoosier DER of 343 (4th). When Indiana has the ball, an OER of 188 (4th) will try to score on an Illinois DER of 281 (8th). Points may be hard to come by in this game. Vegas has IND-6.5 has ILL winning by a single point 51% and to cover.
