G’s Expectations or What to Watch in Week 12

Welcome back college football fans. I’m working on a new G’s Exploration that will come out in the next couple of days. The 3 games tonight are about to kickoff, and I’ll monitor them through the post.

…..

Before we get into the predictions, we finally had a breakthrough week with the FBS straight up (just picking the winner) was 37-13 (.740) raising the season to 277-155 (.641). That’s more like it. The FCS straight up was even better at 46-13 (.780) raising the YTD to 280-140 (.667) and giving a weekly total of 83-26 (.761) lifting the overall to 557-295 (.654). Against the spread (picking the winner after adjusting the point totals by the Vegas spread) which is only for FBS vs FBS games was in the black after 2 losing weeks at 27-23 (.540) for a season of 186-179 (.510).

…..

This week’s Expectation is going to be a little different. Instead of focusing on best games during a time period, we need to be aware that November is an especially fun month as conference titles (or invitations to conference championships) are on the line. Let’s start with the FCS.

…..

The Big Sky Conference: there are 2 teams 6-0 in conference play, Montana St (10-0/111) and UC Davis (9-1/137) whose only loss was to California (5-4/64) of the ACC in week 1. Every other team has 2 or more losses with 2 games left to play so this is the effective championship game. The game is at UC Davis at 8:00 (all times Eastern) which should even the match out a little bit. Both teams should get seeds (top 8) in the playoffs, but the winner of this game will clinch the conference. The GCR sees MTST winning 52% of the time.

…..

Buffalo has taken a 7-0 lead at home over Ball St with 7:31 in the first. C Michigan is up 3-0 at Toledo with 4:44 in the first. W Michigan at Bowling Green are scoreless with 8:46 in the first.

…..

In the Big South/Ohio Valley Conference, SEMO (8-2/148) was upset last week by Lindenwood (5-6/212) dropping them into a 5-1 conference record tie with Tennessee Martin (7-3/157) but they have the tie-breaker due to an early season victory. If SEMO wins out hosting W Illinois (3-7/193) and at Tennessee St (7-3/162) they will get the automatic bid. If they lose a game and T-Martin can sweep home games against Tennesse Tech (5-5/197) and Lindenwood, they will grab the title. Stereotypically, only one team from this conference makes the playoff, but this year could be the exception. Both teams are favored by the GCR this week: SEMO (84%) and T-Martin (66%).

…..

Ball St ties the score 7-7 (4:34), Bowling Green is on the board 3-0 (7:39), and Toledo took the lead 7-3 (4:14).

…..

The Colonial will have multiple teams in the playoffs, as usual. Richmond (8-2/147) is in the driver’s seat at 6-0 in the conference and should beat Hampton (5-5/203) 61%. There are 4 1-loss in conference teams: Delaware (8-1/133) who lost to the Spiders, Villanova (8-2/156) who avoided Richmond this season, Rhode Island (8-2/153), ditto, and Stony Brook (8-2/149), ditto.

…..

No change in scores.

…..

Sacred Heart (4-5/208) and Merrimack (4-6/249), late of the Northeast Conference had to become independent this year because they switched to a non-football playing conference. At noon, they finally play each other. Neither team can possibly make the playoffs. Merrimack has a 59% chance of taking the “we won the indies” title.

…..

All games are moving to the second quarter.

…..

The Ivy League does not participate in the postseason, only plays ten games a year, and never has a bye week (although they don’t start until week 4). Harvard (7-1/138) should beat Penn (2-6/228) 65% and Dartmouth (7-1/143) should beat Cornell (3-5/251) 71%. Harvard beat Dartmouth last week although it is not uncommon for tied teams to share the conference title.

…..

The 6-team MEAC’s champion plays the SWAC champion in the Cricket Celebration Bowl in Atlanta. The two best teams, South Carolina St (7-2/151) and NC Central (6-3/167) played two weeks ago with State winning. At 3-0 in the conference, they are primed to go bowling. Both NC Central and SCST’s opponent this week, Morgan St (5-5/195) are 2-1 in conference. If Morgan St upsets the undefeated Bulldogs, the chaos will be exciting to see. SCST should win 60% and clinch the Celebration Bowl.

…..

Ball St took the lead 14-7 14:55 in the second, Toledo extended their lead 10-3 (12:46), and W Michigan is in the red zone trailing 3-0 (11:53).

…..

The Missouri Valley Conference is traditionally the strongest FCS (with Big Sky fighting for the top spot). This year is no exception. Perennial powerhouse North Dakota St (9-1/135) will host Missouri St (8-2/160) at 3:30 with both teams 6-0 in the conference. Yes, both South Dakota (7-2/141) and South Dakota St (8-2/136) are 5-1. State lost to NDST earlier in the season and SDAK gets the Bison next week. The game of the week is this almost de facto championship game. The GCR has North Dakota St winning 60% of the time. This one will be fun.

…..

W Michigan converted and took the lead 7-3 (10:25) and Buffalo added a field goal to trail 14-10 (12:06).

…..

In the Northeast Conference, Duquesne (7-2/152) beat Robert Morris (6-4/183) to take a 1-game lead in the conference at 5-0. C Connecticut (5-5/205) is waiting for the Dukes next week tied with RM at 4-1. This week Duquesne hosts Wagner (4-6/236) and should win 73%. C Connecticut faces Robert Morris and has to win to have a shot at winning the conference next week. It will be close and the GCR picks Robert Morris at just 51% to win.

…..

The Patriot League has 3 teams at 3-1 in conference: Bucknell (5-5/199), Holy Cross (4-6/213), and Lehigh (6-3/163). Bucknell beat Lehigh, Lehigh beat Holy Cross, and Holy Cross hosts Bucknell this week. To make the playoffs (and only 1 team typically is selected from this conference) a team must have 7 wins (which neither team can do) OR win the conference. The winner of this game has the possibility. If Holy Cross wins, they need Lehigh to lose this week or next. Bucknell controls its own destiny. Lehigh needs Bucknell to lose this week or next. Bucknell has a 52% advantage over Holy Cross this week.

…..

Ball St takes a 21-10 lead with 8:14 in the half.

…..

The Pioneer League is the strongest it’s been in years. They could have 5 playoff-eligible teams. Drake (7-1/146) is a cut above the rest and could clinch the conference with a win this week hosting Morehead St (6-4/177). Drake should win 63%.

…..

Toledo increases their lead to 17-3 (4:33 in the half). Bowling Green up 10-7 (5:08).

…..

Mercer (9-1/128) has all but wrapped up the SoCon title and will lose to Alabama (7-2/12) 93% of the time. The conference games this week should be mismatches.

…..

Incarnate Word (8-2/144) has all clinched the Southland conference title at 5-0 in conference with 2 games left and needing just 1 win.

…..

Bowling Green has added to their lead 16-7 (4:06).

…..

The SWAC is one of two conferences (along with the Sun Belt) that still has divisions. The winner of each division plays the SWAC conference championship game with the winner facing the winner of the MEAC in the Cricket Celebration Bowl. Jackson St (7-1/142) will clinch the East with a win at Alabama St (5-4/185) at 3:00. They should at 60%. In the West, Southern (6-4/178) will clinch with a win over Ark Pine Bluff (3-7/239) and should 73%.

…..

Toledo leads at halftime 24-3. Ball St is up 21-17 (1:33). Bowling Green is leading 17-7 (1:58).

…..

Our final FCS conference is the United Athletic Conference where the two teams with just a single loss in conference at playing at 7:00. Abilene Christian (7-3/159) invades Tarleton (8-2/154). Both teams will probably make the playoffs, but the winner has the upper hand for the conference championship. The GCR has Tarleton 56%.

…..

Ball St up 28-17 (1:03).

…..

Now let’s move up through the Group of 5 (I really need to start saying Group of 6). The American Conference has two teams undefeated in internal play: Army (9-0/10) is leading at 7-0 and Tulane (8-2/29) and 6-0. Army is idle this week. Navy (7-2/53) is 5-1 and is the only other team legitimately in the running for the championship game. Navy could put a potential prematch with Army (they play each other the week after the conference championships in a non-conference game) when hosting Tulane at 12:00. Vegas has Tulane -7.0 and all but clinching a spot in the championship game. The GCR agrees 57% and to cover.

…..

Conference USA has 2 teams that are 5-0 in conference: Jacksonville St (6-3/85) and W Kentucky (7-2/47). These 2 teams clash in two weeks and could meet again the next week for the title. The only other team that could make the title game is Sam Houston (7-2/69) if they win out and beat Jacksonville St. They’ve already lost to W Kentucky. All 3 teams should win handily this weekend.

…..

All games are at the half. Ball St 28-24 over Buffalo, Bowling Green 17-7 over W Michigan, and Toledo 27-3 over C Michigan.

…..

Speaking of the MAC, 4 teams are 4-1 (including Bowling Green and W Michigan) in conference and 2 more are 3-2 (including Buffalo currently losing tonight). It’s a madhouse for the mad MAC that won’t be decided this week. Just watch the games and enjoy some fun football – not always the most polished – but always exciting.

…..

The Mountain West still has 2 perfect teams in conference: Boise St (8-1/17) and Colorado St (6-3/84). Both are double-digit Vegas and GCR favorites this week.

…..

The Sun Belt still has divisions. The East is led by Ga Southern (6-3/72) by virtue of a 1-point victory over Marshall (6-3/86). Both are 4-1 in conference. James Madison has a small chance if they win out (including a victory over Marshall) and GASO loses 2. Old Dominion could win if they win out which would include wins over the other 3. James Madison and Old Dominion are playing this week. Vegas has JMU-3.0 and the GCR agrees 66% and to cover. In the West, Louisiana (8-1/27) and perfect in conference clinches with a win hosting South Alabama (4-5/117). Vegas has LAU-7.0 and the GCR agrees 73% and to cover.

…..

The two members of the Pac-12 are both playing Mountain West teams again this week. Nothing else to add.

…..

Moving to the Core 4: the ACC has a lone perfect team in conference in SMU (8-1/7) and they should be favored in all games remaining – Boston College (5-4/62), at Virginia (5-4/54), and California (5-4/64). Their opponent in the championship game, assuming SMU doesn’t falter, is a little trickier with Miami FL’s (9-1/11) loss to Georgia Tech (6-4/43) last week. The Hurricanes are 5-1 in conference and off this week. Clemson (7-2/22) plays its final ACC game of the year this week at Pittsburgh (7-2/20) with a chance to finish 7-1 in the conference. Vegas has Clemson-10.0 in the noon game and the GCR agrees on the victory (52%) but Pitt will cover.

…..

All 3 MAC games have started the 2nd half.

…..

The Big 12 also has one remaining perfect team in conference with BYU (9-0/3). They should win big over Kansas (3-6/63) although the Jayhawks just upended Iowa St (7-2/21). Colorado (7-2/18) is now the lone 1-loss in conference team and poised to make the championship game. They host Utah (4-5/80) this week and should cover the 10-point spread.

…..

The Big Ten has 4 of the top 5 in the 2nd top 25 released by the playoff committee and no one else. The GCR has those 4 teams in the top 9; Indiana (10-0/1), Oregon (10-0/2), Ohio St (8-1/4), and Penn St (8-1/9). No other team is in the top 25. Penn St lost to Ohio St who lost to Oregon. Indiana and Ohio St play November 23rd. It’s a tight race at the top and a whole bunch of also rans this year. Indiana is idle this week and the other 3 should win big.

…..

Buffalo has stormed back to take a 31-28 lead. Bowling Green is all over W Michigan 31-7. Toledo is crushing C Michigan 34-3.

…..

The final conference is the SEC. No team is perfect in the conference and it’s possible to have an 8-way tie. 3 1-loss teams and 5 2-loss teams with 3 weeks to go. Tennessee (8-1/8), 5-1 in conference, invades Georgia (7-2/14), 5-2, after the Bulldogs could not get an offense going against Mississippi (8-2/13) last week. This is Georgia’s last SEC game this season. Vegas has GEO-10.0, but the GCR has TENN 51% and to cover. Texas A&M (7-2/19) is also 5-1 in conference and are playing New Mexico St (2-7/125). Texas (8-1/5) is 4-1 in conference and heads into Arkansas (5-4/67) where Tennessee picked up their L early this season. Vegas has the Longhorns-13.5 and the GCR agrees to win, but Arkansas will cover.

…..

No change in score.

…..

I hope this was interesting – certainly a little different format than the normal Expectation. Thank you for reading and sharing with others. Without further ado, here is every game for the week. Happy Week 12, G.
