G’s Explanation or The Six (Yes, Six) Final Tournaments!

Welcome back to mega-post part II, oh great and wonderful college sports fans. We now have the 8-team lineup for the College Basketball Crown Tournament and can publish all six tournament brackets in a single place.

…..

We will have two tables each for the women and the men. The formats are roughly the same for each. The first table will be the tournament brackets while the second will be a simple listing of number of teams in each tournament by conference.

…..

Let’s start with the women. The three tournaments are not equal. The NCAA gets first choice, and it is rare, if ever, that a team declines – compare it to the football championship tournaments (12-team for FBS and 24-team for FCS) – this is what teams play the season to be invited to. There are 68 teams fighting for the national title. Next up is the 32-team Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament (WBIT). 16 of the teams are seeded 1-4 in the four regions while the other 16 are not seeded (although one can do the math to figure it out pretty easily). Finally, the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) which has an additional 48 teams that are not formally seeded, as such. 32 teams play in Round 1 while 16 enjoy a bye (the top 16 seeds by logic) meeting the R1 winners in Round 2. Three tournaments, 148 teams out of the 363 available. In the table below, a number followed by “-PI” indicates a play-in game. Here is the mega-bracket:

Like the women, the three tournaments for the men are not equal. The NCAA still gets first choice and has 68 teams in the bracket. In this case, the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) is next up, but has 32 teams included. The top 4 teams in each of the 4 regions are seeded while the other 16 teams are not. Finally, announced today although play does not begin until April. is the 8-team College Basketball Crown. No seeds, per se, and all games in Las Vegas, so it could be worse. There was supposed to be a fourth tournament, the College Basketball Invitational (CBI), which would have had an additional 16 teams, but it was cancelled on March 12th. That leaves us with three tournaments and 108 teams out of the 365 available – 40 fewer teams playing than the women. In the table below, a number followed by “-PI” indicates a play-in game. Starting tomorrow, when the games begin, we will have daily updates on the games of the day as well as GCR predictions. Thank you for reading (it’s why we do this), commenting or questioning (it’s how we improve), and sharing with others (it’s how we grow). See you tomorrow, JoJo and G.
