Men’s Basketball or the Top 365 for Week 10

Welcome back, sports fans, as we switch gears from the women to the men. Like we did with the women yesterday, look for a comparison among the 31 conferences. Before we get to the Top 365, let’s look at a game last night that drives home something we’ve been talking about all season.

In the Big 12 last night, Kansas (11-5/23 before the game) hosted Iowa St (16-0/9 before the game). On paper an easy win for the Cyclones and Vegas had them favored -3.5. The GCR, in the current Score calculation, would have agreed up to -5.5. The Scores reflected that (Iowa St 87.92 and Kansas 77.95 + 4.5 home court to equal 82.45). Despite 5 losses, Kansas had played the most difficult schedule so far this season while Iowa St was undefeated playing the 79th most challenging slate. The RPI tells a different story, though. Kansas, boosted by being challenged, had an RPI of .682 (9th), significantly better than the Cyclones .640 (20th). Using RPI as the metric behind predictions would have predicted an upset. More importantly, we have been saying all season that the GCR rank is a snapshot in time and the RPI is an indicator of whether a team is expected to improve (RPI closer to #1 than GCR rank) or decline (RPI closer to #365 than GCR rank). In this case the rankings are almost perfectly flipped: Kansas RPI 9, GCR 23 and Iowa St RPI 20, GCR 9. Kansas exposed Iowa St 84-63 in the game. After all games yesterday, Kansas rose 5 places in the GCR to 18 and 6 places in RPI to 3. Iowa St dropped 1 spot to 10 in GCR and gained a spot in RPI to 19 while gaining 4 spots in SOS to 75th. If the game was repeated today the GCR prediction using the Score would have Kansas winning by 1.72. We think we may need to figure how to use the RPI as a game predictor. The math is a little tricky because of the scale, but we will work on it. If we can figure it out, we will use both when talking about games even when they are in conflict with each other like this game would have been.

Some games to watch this week, starting with today, January 14th. In the ACC, North Carolina (14-2/13) is visiting Stanford (13-4/26). The coast-to-coast conferences have got to be tough on the players between long flights and jet lag. Similarly, Duke (15-1/9) is playing at California (13-4/46). In the Big Ten Iowa (12-4/41) will try to upset Purdue (15-1/7).

On Saturday, we have Michigan St (15-2/8) at Washington (10-6/68) also from the Big Ten. In the SEC, we have Kentucky (10-6/58) at Tennessee (12-5/38). Also, keep an eye on Iowa St who will play at Cincinnati (8-8/118) – on paper, not even a contest, but we have all seen a team lose a second time in similar situations. On Tuesday, our best Big East game features Seton Hall (14-3/20) at St John’s (12-5/35). The game of the week, also on Tuesday, features Vanderbilt (16-0/6) at Arkansas (12-4/29).
