Men’s Basketball or The Top 365 for Week 11

Welcome back, college sports fans, to the latest Top 365 for Men’s Basketball. First, a teaser. In the ranking below, there is a new column labeled RPIF or RPI Factor. Last week, we talked a good bit about why some teams have a higher or lower GCR Rank compared to the GCR RPI. To sum up, the Rank is a snapshot in time assuming all games were played “today”. The RPI digs deeper into the strength of schedule (SOS) metric. While neither of them is more “correct” than the other, the difference is an indicator of how a team will perform in the future: if the Rank is closer to #1 than the RPI, expect the team to lose some games – and vice versa. We use the Score metric (which is in the same order as Rank) to predict games and wanted to come up with a way to use RPI as an additional predictor of games, primarily in those games where one team has a higher Score and the other has a higher RPI.

Monday, when we posted the Women’s Top 363, we mentioned we had not yet figured it out. We have now but will have a special post on Friday to talk about how we derived it and how to use it. For now, just know the new column is integral in the math. There could still be some changes to the look of it (for example, scale it so that the highest value ~100) or not. Either way, the fundamental formulas are there.

The most interesting games for the Men this week happen on Saturday when North Carolina invades Virginia, Illinois attacks Purdue, Texas Tech hosts Houston, and Tennessee meets Alabama. On Monday, Duke hosts Louisville and Arizona heads north to BYU. The game of the week is on Tuesday when undefeated Nebraska (18-0/5) visits Michigan (17-1/3). The Score difference, after applying the 4.5-point home court bonus has MICH by about 6 points. The new-fangled RPIF has the Wolverines winning by a little more than 9 points, assuming the same 4.5-point home court advantage which is not yet confirmed. The game is on Peacock at 7:00 Eastern Tuesday. It is interesting that Michigan’s RPI is 2nd (compared to 3rd Rank) and Nebraska’s RPI is 9th (compared to 6th in Rank).
