Men’s Basketball or The Top 365 for Week 6

On Monday, during the Women’s Basketball Top 363, we talked about the percentage of non-D1 games played by the men vs the women. If you didn’t get a chance to read that, the analysis is pretty interesting, we think. The upshot is the men play these “cupcakes” at a higher rate (9.7% vs 7.7% as of last Sunday) than the women. Both are higher than football (2.2%). We did miss a couple of key parts of the analysis on why basketball would be higher than football at this point. It is true that basketball allows for multiple non-D1 games, but they play almost 3x games. The missing bit is that we were comparing a (nearly) complete football season to the opening months – pre-conference schedule – of the basketball season. In football, most teams that play non-D1 teams typically play them in September, so a better comparison which is 60 events or a 4.8% rate. The other big difference, which we touched on but weren’t complete, is that in football, only the FCS plays non-D1 teams. Of the 265 Division I teams, 129 or 48.6% are FCS. If we just look at FCS teams, the rate jumps to ~10%. In basketball, any team can play a non-D1 team, and while some power teams do, it is only a few each year. There are 5 major conferences in college basketball (ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, and SEC) which are just 79 teams. That means that 78.4% of the men’s teams and 78.2% of the women’s teams are mid-majors – the squads most likely to play at least one non-D1 team during the season. Now, we feel like the analysis is more complete and, we hope, clearer.

After six weeks of basketball, we are down to just 7 undefeated teams: Michigan (1), Arizona (4), Duke (5), Nebraska (6), Vanderbilt (10), Iowa St (19), and Miami OH (146). Every team has had at least one victory except SC St (365) who is 0-12 so far. There has been a smattering of conference games (example: the Big Ten plays two conference games in early December to ease the traffic burden on a coast-to-coast conference) and I look forward to seeing which teams rise to the top once conference foes are the norm.
