Men’s Basketball or The Week 3 Top 365

Welcome back sports fans. We posted the College Football Top 265 on Sunday, the Women’s Basketball Top 363 on Monday, and today is for the Men. We are starting to see a little clarity in the rankings now. We should be able to start predictions next week. We will talk about how to calculate that then. You can still use the difference in GCR Rank and RPI to gauge a team’s trajectory.

One observation. While many of the power teams are playing lower-level schools, most of them do not play outside of Division 1. The mid-majors do however, and every single day of the season, there are more men’s games against these “outside” foes than on the women’s side. Granted there are two more teams (the Citadel and VMI do not have women’s teams), but it is every day. Maybe it is because there is a little bit more parity in the men’s game or maybe because women’s teams are underfunded and can’t afford to play a “money” game. We don’t know, but it is an observation.

  Hi Scott, great question and thank you for it. There are three primary reasons. First, most teams are playing schedules with wide variation early in the season which means Strength of Schedule (SOS) fluctuates fairly wildly as well – keep in mind the SOS is a combination of “my” opponents and “my” opponent’s opponents value. Second, the GCR for any sport assumes all games that have been played have been played “now.” A team’s SOS can be positively or negatively influenced by w a win or loss by an opponent after “our” game. Third, the GCR formula is a little more complex than this but think back to degrees of freedom we talked about in Black Belt class. Think of the denominator as games played. Right now, most teams have played just a handful, so fluctuations in the numerator (e.g., win/loss, SOS) have a large impact in the value. Later in the season, the degrees of freedom become large enough that the fluctuations become milder. Did this help?
