Men’s Basketball or Which Team Is on Top in Week 14?

Welcome back, college sports fans, as we finish up the rankings for this week, the 14th of the season, with the Men’s Top 365. There are just 3 1/2 weeks left before the conference tourneys so every game is important. In both the men’s and women’s games, we almost get used to teams being 22-2 or 21-4 or something really good like that, but winning game after game is a difficult task for even a given year’s best team. Upsets occur every week. This week was no exception as we see some teams dropping.

By the way, the reason we call games won by the underdog “upset” is because of a horserace in the 1800s when a long-odds horse shocked everyone by beating the best horse of the time. Of course, the winning horse’s name was “Upset.” Since then, individuals and teams pulled an Upset when they stole an unexpected victory. Now, we use the term as both a noun and a verb, rarely saying “pulling an…” It’s just an upset.

That may seem like a lot, but keep in mind there are just under 340 games scheduled in those seven days. One more loss by these schools (or a first one by Miami OH) and the post-season could go south in a hurry. Seeding is important especially for those teams looking for byes or double byes.

As a reminder, we can use the Score and RPIF columns to predict the winner of these games. Just add 4.5 to the home team and compare. If one team has the higher Score and RPIF, that team should win and the differences when the “losing” team is subtracted from both metrics provides a range of theoretical point spread. If one team has the higher Score, but the other team has a higher RPIF, we cannot predict that game – too close to call.
