Men’s College Basketball Top 364 (March 5, 2025)

Welcome to episode 457 of the GCR, oh great and wonderful sports fans. A couple of days ago we talked about the women, but today, it’s all about the men’s game. Auburn was so far ahead of any other team in the ranking that the loss to Texas A&M didn’t drop them out of the top spot. They are now tied with Duke and Drake for fewest losses at 3 and still would be favored to win any game at any location. It’s been that kind of season for the War Tigers. Oh yeah, they’ve played the second most difficult schedule and are still 27-3.

The Atlantic Sun began the conference tournament season with games on the 2nd and 3rd. Austin Peay took out North Florida and C Arkansas dropped Stetson on March 2nd. AP lost to North Alabama, Queens topped Fla Gulf Coast, Jacksonville eliminated E Kentucky, and Lipscomb ended the season for C Arkansas on March 3rd. They play their semifinal round on March 6th with the final on March 9th. Like the women, the Ohio Valley conference will be the first to crown a champion on March 8th. Five conferences will wait until Selection Sunday (March 16th): ACC, Atlantic 10, Big Ten, Ivy, and SEC.

Like the women on Monday, you may notice the Score column has larger numbers than before. I want to explain just a little more. The formula is the same, but the scale is different, normalized to a standard. It provides a scale that adjusts to the ever-growing denominator of games played while maintaining predictive value. Add 4.0 points to the score of the home team, subtract the smaller Score from the higher Score and, voila, you have the expected point differential (see note about Auburn above).
