WBB Ranking February 17, 2025

Welcome back college football fans to the 2nd women’s basketball ranking, the 3rd college basketball post, and the 452nd overall GCR posting on this blog. What a week! UCLA loses to Southern Cal, South Carolina gets trounced at home (first loss in 72 games) by UCONN, and LSU drops one to surging Texas. The week began with UCLA on top, but they dropped and were replaced by the Gamecocks mid-week (I only post once a week, but monitor daily), only to take the top spot back. I know the voters have Notre Dame as number one as of today. A reminder that is true for both basketball and football: the GCR has no emotion, so it doesn’t react any differently to a loss in January or March than to one in November. It also assumes every game happens “now”. There’s no “recency” or “history”. Every game counts the same. Say Team A was 28-0 against a top 15 schedule and was ranked number 1. Every other team has at least 2 losses. Team A loses their 29th game. The GCR likely would have them retain their top spot although the AP/Coaches polls may drop them. The program treats them the same as if they lost their first game then won 28 straight or won 14, lost, then won 14 more. At the same time record/performance is only half the battle with the GCR which also considers strength of schedule. If two teams are both 28-1, the one with the tougher road (lower SOS ranking) will be ranked higher.

For example, LSU and Southern Cal each have fewer losses than South Carolina, but are ranked lower because of the softer schedules, especially non-conference games early in the season. Comparing the Score column and adding 2.5 points to the home team will give a pretty good prediction of the winner. RPI is a combination of winning percentage, opponents’ winning percentage, and opponents’ opponent’s winning percentage that is an approximation of the one used by the tournament committee.
