G’s Evaluation for Week 6 or Almost Officially Half Way There

Hello greatest fans of the greatest sport. First, before we do anything else, I’d like to call out a good friend, Jim Harvey. He and his son went to the Iowa/Michigan game and had fantastic seats. The picture below came from him. If you go to any game: major, homecoming, high school, whatever, send it to me at grgettys@gmail.com and I’ll post it in a blog. Thanks, Jim, for starting this and having that great idea! This is my first time trying to post a pic, so if it doesn’t work, I’ll try again. There’s no giving up in college football.

Speaking of not giving up, how about SMU (26) coming back down 21 in the 4th against Tulsa (54) to win in the third OT. Or Virginia Tech (80) blowing a 28-point lead to Miami (32), to persevere not only to get a TD following the collapse, but stopping the ‘Canes on their final play to preserve the victory. Great games all day long. There’s more on the way and tonight’s blog will be all about the perfects and the perfectly imperfect teams and what they still face this season.

Here’s a new take on the weekly ranking picture: in the FCS there are 5 perfect teams and 7 who have yet to taste sweet victory. The best team in that grouping is North Dakota State (63) while Valparaiso (256) is currently the worst team in Division I. There are still 11 FCS schools in the top 100. The Group of 5 has 4 undefeated schools and only 3 winless with Cincinnati (13) leading the way and Akron (249) not really being very competitive yet. For the big boys, the Power 5 has 12 teams without a loss and while everyone has won at least 1 game, 7 have won just 1. The best team is once again Ohio State while Georgia Tech (158) is playing the caboose this week.

The rankings are below. One note before I make this week’s playoff prediction, especially for those who are new to the GCR: the program a) assumes all games are played simultaneously and b) does not look into the future for this week’s ratings. So that means sometimes teams will drop with a win while other teams rise while being idle. With that the GCR top 4 are Ohio State, Alabama, Penn State, and Oklahoma. Since the Buckeyes and the Nittany Lions play November 23, I would drop the loser of that game and add #5 Clemson – as of this week. There is still a lot of football left.

Without further ado, I ask for your comments, discussion, questions, subscription, and sharing, as you enjoy this week’s GCR ranking from Ohio State to Valparaiso:

  1. Love the new tradition Robert and looking forward to more photos. Also appreciated your in-game assistance on what the Wolverines might be thinking by continuing to run it straight up the middle. Fortunately they have Illinois next week because the fun starts again with Penn State and Notre Dame after that. Better get a new offensive strategy!!

  2. It’s already spreading – a new pic from a different game in today’s analysis post. It’s tough to be happy about an offense that gained fewer than 300 yards, was 3 of 13 on 3rd down, and didn’t score in the last 51 minutes of the game. The Nittany Lions and the Irish would really be happy if Michigan thinks that is good production.
