Women’s Basketball or The Top 363 for Week 10

Welcome back, sports fans. It’s been an incredibly hectic time at the GCR since around September with football games as well as preparing for and then executing basketball games. Now that there is just one football game left (so 3 more football posts before the offseason), we can focus on basketball. The timing is perfect as we are now in full conference play mode. To be fair, there are the occasional non-conference games, but they add spice now, just as December conference games did.

As a transition to (mostly) basketball, tune in tomorrow for a conference comparison for the women. Then we will have our men’s top 365 on Wednesday followed by a Thursday conference comparison for them. In the weeks leading up to the conference championships and post-season tournaments, we will have at least one analysis post in addition to the rankings. We did receive some feedback that we did more deep-dive type work in football (thanks, David G for the comments), so we will work to improve that.

We will also add some key games to watch with focus on the top teams at first until we can develop a better mechanism to identify key games for middle- and low-tier mid-major conferences. We plan to continue to improve over the rest of the season. Let’s start with a few games.

Wednesday at 7:00 (all times Eastern) we have a Big 12 matchup between TCU (16-1/8) and West Virginia (14-3/20). TCU has a Score of 88.23 which should provide a 3.5+ theoretical advantage over WVU’s home court adjusted 84.59 (80.09+4.50). Tied at 5-2 in conference right now, the Big East’s Marquette (11-5/42) will invade Seton Hall (11-5/57) to try to keep pace with UCONN. MARQ (68.32) should lose this game on the road to SHAL’s 69.28 adjusted Score (65.28+4.50) by around a single point. Also, keep an eye on UCAL at Minnesota, Iowa St at Colorado, and Baylor atUtah.

The game of the week is at 7:00 on Thursday when Texas (18-1/3) heads to the sold-out South Carolina (17-1/4) arena. These teams met in Las Vegas for the Players Era Championship game with Texas getting the close win 66-64. Texas lost for the first time this weekend to LSU. It wouldn’t surprise us if these teams meet again for the SEC championship in March, if not in the NCAAs. The Gamecocks have led all teams in attendance for the last decade or so and the crowd will be a factor. The GCR, however, uses the same 4.5-point home court factor for every team (something else to work on). Texas has a Score of 93.72 while SCAR has an adjusted Score of 97.21 (92.71+4.5) – look for SCAR to take this one by at least 3.5. Also, watch for Illinois at Michigan, Nebraska at Michigan St, and Maryland at Southern Cal.

For the weekend, there are some good mid-major games. For example, High Point @ Longwood (Big South), NJ Tech @ Bryant (American East), Marshall at Old Dominion (Sun Belt), and S Utah @ Abilene Christian (Western Athletic) as well as North Dakota St at South Dakota St (Summit) – all of these games on are Saturday. Sunday brings us Mississippi at Georgia (SEC), Louisville at NC St (ACC), Iowa St at Oklahoma St (Big 12), Davidson at La Salle (Atlantic 10) and Maryland at UCLA (Big Ten), among many really good games before the next ranking.
