Women’s Basketball or The Top 363 for Week 11

Welcome back, sports fans. First, an apology. The intention was for us to post today’s FBS Championship game preview, but the LA/Chicago overtime playoff game during a snowstorm was too much fun to watch. The game is tonight, so the preview will come before kickoff.

But this morning, being Monday, is about Women’s Basketball. We are mostly in conference play mode, but the odd OOC game still pops up. One cost the South Carolina Gamecocks (19-1/6) three spots in this week’s GCR. Sitting at number 3 after avenging an earlier loss to Texas (19-2/3), they had a Sunday game in Baltimore at Coppin St (4-16/328) which was part of a home and home with the HBCU school. Despite winning 90-48, SCAR’s strength of schedule (SOS) took a major hit resulting in the drop. Texas lost two games and only dropped from 2nd to 3rd because those losses were on the road to SCAR and LSU (17-2/26) improving their SOS which pretty much offset their performance score dip.

We’ve talked about SOS and the risk of playing a relatively easy first-half schedule. Two examples to drive home the point. First, the Big 12’s Iowa St (14-5/67). They had a bottom 25 SOS (according to the GCR) while starting the season 10-0. Following an impressive home 5-point win over Iowa (16-2/7), they continued the streak by beating N Iowa (9-8/166) by 28 and conference foe Kansas (11-8/63) by 3 – both at home. They played just their second road game of the year on December 31st and beat Houston (6-12/232) 80-62 to go 14-0 and 2-0 in the conference. At the time, their GCR SOS was 315th in the country. They lost the next 5 games, 4 of which were on the road, and have dropped to 14-5 and 2-5. As of today’s ranking, their GCR rank and their RPI rank are equal. That should indicate they are about where they should be – not the threat that at one point awarded them an AP top 10 ranking.

The opposite is Duke (13-6/23) who has the #1 SOS in the country. In November they lost to West Virginia (15-4/22), South Carolina (19-1/6), and UCLA (17-1/2) in 13 days after opening the season with a loss against Baylor (17-3/8). In December, they lost to LSU (17-2/26) before beating Virginia Tech (14-5/64) and Syracuse (16-3/20) in conference play. They started the season 3-6 with the toughest schedule before winning 10 straight and going 8-0 in the ACC. We would not be surprised if they were ranked in the next AP poll or two. Certainly, there are teams in the middle, but these extremes are not that uncommon, especially in the women’s game. If we were coaching, we would rather have Iowa St on our schedule right now that Duke for sure, even though the Cyclones are still in the AP top 25. The Blue Devils are a scarier team. But, JoJo and G, Duke lost to all of the non-ACC Power teams they played? Yes, but in November and December. Our bet is that those losses were seen as educational opportunities that, at least so far, have paid off in the conference. Just as South Carolina beating Coppin St did little more for the Gamecocks that allow the bench to play some extra minutes, early schedules packed with similar games just to put some wins on the board (hoping for a tournament bid most likely), don’t really help the team grow. If one wants to be a good ping-pong player, one does not play someone who is not as good at the game. Instead, one plays someone who can beat them 21-3 so that they can improve. Then, when they do win, it means a lot more. Hats off to Duke for finding the opponents who helped them improve – they could be a scary team come March.

As a reminder, we can use the Score column in the table below to predict upcoming games. Just add 4.5 to the home team and compare. We are still working on an RPI-based prediction and hope to have that next week. Here are a few games to watch this week. Starting today, Brown will try to stay perfect in the Ivy at Columbia, Michigan and Vanderbilt meet in New Jersey along with Ohio St and TCU in the Coretta Scott King Classic doubleheader. This afternoon, UCONN will try to stay undefeated as Notre Dame comes to town. The best game on Tuesday is an American Conference game between Rice and Tulsa. Davidson and Rhode Island, of the Atlantic 10, will fight it out on Wednesday accompanied by an important MAC game as UMASS invades Ball St. Thursday brings us South Carolina at Oklahoma, Iowa and Maryland, Miami FL at Notre Dame, Kentucky at Tennessee, and UC Davis at UC San Diego as key matchups. The most interesting game on Friday involves 0-19 Valparaiso at Bradley looking for the first victory. There are a ton of games on Saturday with Illinois at Nebraska and Texas Tech at Utah being the top draws. Sunday brings us Ohio St at Iowa (combined 32-4 record) which is a co-game of the week with Vanderbilt at South Carolina (combined 37-1 record). If you haven’t watched any women’s games recently, we strongly recommend that you do. They are athletic, entertaining, and full of great plays.

The schedule for this week since we missed last night’s planned post. Tonight, we will preview Miami FL and Indiana prior to the 7:30 Eastern kickoff. Tomorrow, we will have the final Top 265 for college football. Wednesday, it’s the Men’s Top 365. Thursday, we will have the final football conference comparison and commentary – our final football post for the 2025-26 season. Friday, we will have some additional basketball deep dive, though we haven’t landed on the final topic yet. We will take Saturday and Sunday off so that we can be back on Monday for Women’s Basketball again.
