Women’s Basketball or The Top 363 for Week 12!

Welcome back, college sports fans, as we focus on the women’s game today. Last week, we talked about the new metric, RPI Factor (RPIF), which is a new predictive metric here at the old GCR. We described it in detail on Friday using the men’s data, but the same rules apply here. We now have two predictors for basketball. First, we have the Score metric (found in the table below) which can be used by adding 4.5 to the home team – higher total should win and the difference in those two numbers is a theoretical point spread. We’ve mentioned that every week, at least since December. Now we have the RPIF which can be used the same way – apply the 4.5, etc. Let’s use it in a real example.

The best game today, since Tennessee and Mississippi were postponed due to icy weather, is Florida (13-8/84) at LSU (18-2/22). For comparison, Vegas has this game going to LSU-27.5. If we look at the Score for each team, we give Florida 58.68 and LSU 74.93. Add 4.5 to LSU and we have 79.43-58.68 or 20.75 LSU. Looking at the RPIF for each, we give FLA 147.2 (63rd best) and LSU 159.5 (27th). Add 4.5 to LSU and we have 164.0-147.2 or 16.8 LSU. The GCR has never been about sports betting although we do predict games and spreads for fun. We would say that we expect LSU to win by between 16.8 and 20.75 points – LSU to win, FLA to cover. If the Vegas line had been LSU-18.5, we would have said we had no prediction on the game. If the Score and the RPIF disagreed on the winner (example following), we would have said we had no prediction on the game.

Let’s say LSU was hosting Duke (14-6/23). LSU would have the same 79.43 adjusted Score and Duke would bring 74.84 so LSU by 4.59. But LSU would also retain the 164.0 RPIF compared to Duke’s 166.1 (16th) indicating Duke would win by 2.1. If, in this example, Vegas gave a line of LSU-5.0 or more, we would predict no winner, but Duke would cover (the opposite if the line was DUKE-2.5 or more). If the line was between those extremes (ex., LSU-2.5), we would predict no winner and no cover.

Again, we are not, nor have we ever been, nor do we ever intend to be a betting source. We predict purely for entertainment purposes and have never bet on a sporting event of any kind (other than fantasy football). By the way, if you ever join a college fantasy football league, let us know – we have tips. But betting on games based on our data is assumed at your own risk. JoJo was a well-behaved, rule-following (for the most part) teenager, yet still did (and still does) a bunch of stuff that left (leave) her parents scratching their heads. To expect an entire team of them to behave as expected is just silly, in our opinion.

Tuesday the best game is West Virginia at Utah – should be a close one. Wednesday, we will be paying close attention to San Diego St at Colorado St – both contenders for the Mountain West title. The Sun Belt has a couple of standings-impacting games with Troy at Marshall and Southern Miss at Ga Southern. Thursday watch for Quinnipiac at Fairfield (of the MAAC not to be confused with the MAC) – both teams are undefeated in conference. Also watch Vanderbilt at Mississippi, a combined 37-5 with Vandy just picking up their first loss – can they rebound? A game that would have been bigger without injuries is Iowa at Southern Cal – can the Trojans get that big win they need? Sunday is the bomb, though. Tennessee at UCONN, Alabama at LSU, Michigan at Michigan St, Baylor at West Virginia, TCU at Texas Tech, Oklahoma at Texas, and Iowa at UCLA. It may be separation weekend.
