Women’s Basketball or the Top 363 for Week 5

Welcome back sports fans. I know there has been a lot of drama around college football and the bowls. We will address that in a special G’s Exploration tomorrow. Today is all about the women in college basketball. As we approach the 1/3 mark of December, we are really closer to half-way through. There is a multi-day hiatus around the Christmas holiday. There are still a number of “seriously – that’s who you chose to play?” games, but some conferences, especially those with close to coast-to-coast teams have already started sneaking in a few in-conference games to ease the burden in January and February.

As we talked about last time, for upcoming games you can use the SCORE column – the scale is on 100 with the highest ranked team in the GCR getting that score. Find the two teams you are interested in, add 4.5 to the home team, and subtract the lower from the higher. The higher score, after home-court adjustment, is the predicted winner, and the difference in the two values is the theoretical point spread.

UCLA has taken the first spot back from UCONN (mostly based on strength of schedule). After 5 weeks and ~10 games played each, the ranking is starting to solidify. Yes, when conference play begins in earnest, we will see some shifts up or down. For example, LSU is ranked 103rd despite being 10-0 and the fact that they are averaging more than 111 points per game. Why? They have played the 360th (out of 363) most difficult schedule. They will, more than likely, do well against better competition in conference play, but they haven’t earned anything yet. We could get into a long diatribe about top conferences allowing ridiculously weak non-conference schedules, but we are just not in the mood today. I wish those voting in the AP and Coaches Poll would give those who do choose the easy path no love early in the season. Maybe that would change things. Maybe the committee will adjust the seeding for those (it is not just LSU, but they are among the worst offenders – see Iowa St) teams in the playoffs. Something needs to be done. Ok, speaking of done, we are too. We would love to hear your comments on the issue.
