Women’s Basketball or Week 14’s Top 363!

Welcome back to the latest and greatest episode of the GCR. Before we jump into the main topic, some major college sports news. A couple of years ago, the Pac-12 was decimated to become the Pac-2 with just Oregon St and Washington St. They were able to play as a 2-team conference in football for two years and joined the West Coast Conference for both men’s and women’s basketball. We will go into more of this in April when all of the shoes have dropped, but the Pac-2 stole teams from the Mountain West to refill their coffers so that they were allowed to compete. Of course, the Mountain West had to retool and refill as well. Yesterday it became official that North Dakota St, winner of something like 11 of the last 15 FCS championships will be the newest MWC member. We at the GCR have said for years that the Bison, as well as their arch-rival, South Dakota St were ready to step up to FBS competition. Clearly more to come so stay tuned.

There is a bit of a shakeup in this week’s Top 363 with a few upsets. We also have a new top team with UCLA taking over UCONN despite the Huskies remaining unbeaten. The Big East is…not very strong – was that politically correct enough? – and while UCONN is winning big game after game, they have the lowest strength of schedule (SOS) in the Top 13 at 51st. UCLA’s 13st SOS was enough for the Bruins to jump to the top on “style” points. Let’s take a look at games to watch in the upcoming week.

By the time we meet to see the Top 363 again, we will be closer to March than to January. For most teams, every game is important to try for a better seed in their conference championships and/or to fight for a big in the NCAAs or the NIT. There are nearly 300 of them this week. Watch every game you can – support college sports in general and women’s basketball specifically. You will not be disappointed in the quality of play, the athleticism, and the basketball IQ of these teams – especially those at the top of the rankings.
