G’s Expectation or Who Keeps Their Zero?

Welcome to week 11, college football fans. I cannot believe there are just 3 weeks left in the regular season (well, except for Army/Navy). Last week was a whopper and the GCR had good and bad bits of the prognostication component. The FCS games were the most successful with the algorithm picking the winner 42 out of 58 times (.724) bringing the year to 287-158 (.645). I’ll take ~.650 at that level. Picking the winners in the FBS, the GCR fell below the goal with a 46-19 (.708) finish bringing the season to 413-152 (.731). Against the spread continued to be a problem with a very disappointing 32-30 (.516) which wasn’t that far off of the season total of 233-213 (.522). With a goal of .600 ATS, the GCR could sweep the 63 qualifying games this week and still be short.

…..

It’s the time of year when pretty much nobody on any team is 100% healthy, there’s enough film (especially if you’re Michigan – sorry, had to do it,) that it’s hard to surprise an opponent, and the wheat is in full separation mode from the chaff. Certainly, there are a bunch of middle of the road teams, but I’m not writing about them this week. This week is all about the extremes.

…..

Starting with the winless wonders, every FBS team has one at least one (East Carolina, Kent St, Sam Houston, and UCONN), but 8 perfectly imperfect teams remain on the FCS side of the fence. One of them is Northwestern St (0-6/217) who stopped playing when their best player was shot and killed. The other 7 are in action this weekend. In no particular order, N Colorado (0-9/216) in the Big Sky conference is traveling to N Arizona (3-6/226) at 3:00 (all times Eastern). This is a great chance for the Bears to pick up win #1 with the GCR picking NAZ at just 52%. Stony Brook (0-9/215) of the Colonial will not have the same level of opportunity when they host Albany (7-3/144) who with a 5-1 conference record is in a 5-way tie for first – ALB 93% at 1:00. McNeese (0-8/212) of the Southland host Houston Christian (4-4/188) at 8:00. Both of these teams lost probable victories over the last two weeks when their respective games with Northwestern St were cancelled. This game, though, probably won’t be a blowout with HOCH at 62%.

…..

The co-games of the week are between two sets of 0-9 teams. I mean, seriously, it’s the second weekend of November, yet we have not one winless matchup, but two! At 1:00 in a Missouri Valley Conference clash of titans, Indiana St (0-9/222) hosts W Illinois (0-9/213). Let’s break this one down a little more. When the Sycamores have the ball, they bring an Offensive Efficiency Rating (OER) of 50 (good for 260th out of 261st), which means they score 5.0 points for every 10.0 points their opponents normally allow, but will be facing a W Illinois Defensive Efficiency Rating (DER) of 62 (260th) meaning they give up 10.0 points for every 6.2 points their opponents normally score. This is weakness vs weakness – gotta love it. On the flip side, the Leatherneck OER is 59 (248th) and will face an INST DER of 79 (226th). Both teams are 0-6 in the conference and one will be 0-7. There is no Vegas line, but the GCR has WILL pulling the victory at a very confident, said with all sarcasm possible, 51%. At 2:00, the Southern Conference or SoCon gives us their version of the same game as Wofford (0-9/221) invades the Citadel (0-9/218). When the Terriers have the rock, they bring an OER of 54 (255th) vs a Citadel DER of 76 (241st). I guess one would expect a school named for a defensive structure to have better defense, but that’s just me. When the Bulldogs are “driving”, they bring a worst-in-Division I OER of 36 (261st). Yes, they score 3.6 points for every 10.0 points their opponents normally allow (84 points on the season). They face a Wofford DER of 84 (203rd). Both of these teams are also 0-6 in conference play and one of them will break out, if either team can score. What if there’s no score until the 3rd OT and the final is 2-0? That would be fun. Wofford’s slightly better defense and offense win the day at 53%.

…..

Also in the FCS, there is a single remaining undefeated team. South Dakota St (9-0/69) takes on Youngstown St (6-3/173) at 12:00. Notwithstanding that I will be in Youngstown next week for this post, the game itself shouldn’t be in question. Both offenses are good with OERs of 162 (6th) and 151 (12th), respectively, but South Dakota St wins the defensive front: DERs of 232 (3rd) and 99 (138th), respectively. The Jackrabbits win 83% of the time.

…..

In the senior circuit, there are 7 perfect teams remaining. This time of year, it’s not uncommon for one or more to fall (see Air Force losing to an inferior Army team badly last week). In conference order, at 3:30, Florida St (9-0/3) hosts Miami FL (6-3/37). The Seminoles at 7-0 in the conference have all but locked up a trip to Charlotte and this win would ice that as well as keep them in the playoff picture. Their downstate cousins would like nothing more than to end the magic season. The Seminoles OER is 157 (9th) and face a MIAF DER of 139 (35th), but the Hurricane OER is 125 (49th) vs an FSU DER of 157 (22nd). Vegas has FSU-14.5 and the numbers support that with FSU 97% and to cover.

…..

The Big TEN has 2 undefeated teams and one will be more challenged than the other this week. At 12:00, Michigan (9-0/1) travels to Penn St (8-1/6). The Wolverines are just dominating with an OER of 166 (4th) to face the PSU DER of 216 (4th) – strength on strength. The Nittany Lions will try to roar with an OER of 172 (2nd behind only LSU) against the best-in-the-country DER of 338 (1st). Strength on strength again, at least on paper. Penn St’s only loss came against the other perfect B10 team, Ohio St 20-12, so a win puts the potential for a 3-way tie for 1st in order. Vegas thinks the game will be close, MICH-4.5, and the GCR sees the Wolverines remaining perfect 78% of the time and to cover. The aforementioned Buckeyes (9-0/2) hosts Michigan St (3-6/68) who have to win to have a hope at a bowl game (spoiler alert: not going to happen) at 7:30. OHST brings an OER of 146 (16th) vs a Spartan DER of 105 (107th) – see note about the Citadel above. The Michigan St OER of 92 (157th) faces a very stingy Buckeye DER of 272 (2nd). Ohio St is favored by 30.5 points and the GCR has the Buckeyes winning greater than 99% of the time and to cover.

…..

Conference USA has a member of the perfect club with Liberty (9-0/12) hosting the Sun Belt’s Old Dominion (4-5/111) with a 1:00 kickoff. When the Flames are driving, they bring an OER of 148 (15th) vs the OD DER of 100 (130th). When the Monarchs lead the charge, an OER of 92 (160th) faces a Liberty DER of 111 (89th). Points should hit the board for both teams in this game. Vegas likes LIB-13.5 and the GCR has the Flames 91% and to cover.

…..

Since I’ve been typing, two MACNation games have kicked off. Ball St has taken an early 7-0 lead over N Illinois with 10:49 in the first while C Michigan and W Michigan are scoreless with 11:53 to go in the first. Ohio and Buffalo kick off at 7:30.

…..

The Pac 12 has a single remaining perfect team in Washington (9-0/5) who hosts Utah (7-2/22) at 3:30. With 3 conference games left, Utah can make the championship game, but with 2 losses in conference, they have to win out. Washington is fighting for the rare Pac 12 playoff spot and a single loss will doom them. That makes this game the co-Game of the Week. When the Huskies are driving, their OER is 143 (18th) vs a Utah DER of 194 (5th). When the Utes are charging, their OER is 97 (146th) vs a WASH DER of 128 (51st). I expect this to be a fairly low scoring Pac 12 game. Vegas has WASH-8.5 and the GCR has them winning 74% and to cover.

…..

W Michigan has now scored going up 7-0 with 9:09 in the first.

…..

In the final co-Game of the Week, with a 7:00 kickoff, Georgia (9-0/4) hosts Mississippi (8-1/10). This game has been on my radar all season as the Bulldogs most challenging. If the trip up in the regular season, it feels like this is the one. The Rebels, whose only loss was at Alabama (8-1/9), are coming in to Athens to be giant killers. When the Dawgs are barking, they have an OER of 142 (19th) vs a MISS DER of 135 (39th). When the Rebels are yelling, an OER of 158 (8th) faces a GEO DER of 180 (10th). This will be a good one with big plays making the difference. Vegas has GEO-10.5 and the GCR see the defense being the difference, GEO 92% and to cover.

…..

Our final game is one with a little bit of controversy. James Madison (9-0/13) of the Sun Belt hosts UCONN (1-8/117). This game should be an absolute rout, but the controversial thing is JMU is in their final season of promotion probation. The rules state that a team that promotes from FCS to FBS must wait two years before they can play in the title game or in a bowl game (unless their aren’t enough 6-win teams available). Last year they “won” the Sun Belt East but had to sit out and this year they are perfect and may have to sit out, by rule. They are appealing the bowl ban (they are not appealing the championship game). More to come on that. This game with a 2:00 kickoff has JMU winning big at 93% and to cover the Vegas 25.5 spread.

…..

No change in score in tonight’s games so far, but both are nearing the end of the first quarter.

…..

Here are all the games for the week. I hope your enjoyed today’s theme of zeros and, if you did, please share with others. Thanks for reading, G
