G’s Expectation or Who Will Win This Week?

Greetings, college football fans, and welcome to another night of MAC football! Bowling Green (5-5/116) is at Toledo (7-3/63) and off to a booming 14-0 start (2:50 in the first). Toledo has the Vegas nod at -14.5 and the GCR nod at 68.5%, but the GCR does have the Falcons to cover +14.5. Also, at the end of the first quarter, Ohio (7-3/70) is trailing Ball St (5-5/100) on the road, 3-0. Vegas likes Ohio -4.0 and the GCR agrees 64.0% and to cover.

…..

Before I jump in, a hearty “thank you” to Rhett G who sent in a question about the GCR’s history. His inquiry was really good in that he was wondering if all GCR seasons were on the blog (no, they aren’t – just the 2019, 2020, 2021, and this season), and if a year over year summary to see where teams (including his beloved NC St) landed over time. He even suggested a way to sum up and long-rank the teams. I love the request so much; I’m going to try. I honestly don’t know if still have some of the older files (they were before drop box existed). If I can find any of them, I will post the final for that year (for the first few years, I stopped before championship week because I hadn’t figured out how to have teams play twice in the same season yet; that was followed by adding the FCS to the mix a few years later). If I can’t find them all, I will at least show what I have in the conglomerate form for what I can find. Should be fun and interesting. Thanks again, Rhett.

…..

And now some fun news. Each year, I make a big deal about November and the MAC playing games on Tuesday and Wednesday because it is a brilliant idea! One of the lesser Group of 5 conferences getting a chance to shine with no other football competition was a marketing coup AND a great way for their players to be on national television. Conference-USA just one-upped the MAC by announcing that beginning next year, they would have games on Tuesday and Wednesday in October! That means from around 10/1 through the Saturday after Thanksgiving, there will be college or pro football…EVERY…DAY! For all the heartache this game can bring to its fanatics, we just have to love college football.

…..

Ohio has scored a touchdown to take a 7-3 lead (currently 13:14 in the second).

…..

The biggest Power 5 game this weekend is Southern Cal (9-1/7) at UCLA (8-2/13). Both Oregon and UCLA lost last week putting the Trojans in the driver’s seat and with an outside shot at a playoff spot, but they have to win out. That means beating UCLA, Notre Dame, and the winner of this week’s Oregon/Utah game (runner up for GOTW). The battle for the Los Angeles area is going to be a tight one: Vegas has SCAL -1.5, the GCR has SCAL 73.6% and to cover. The Group of 5 GOTW pits Boise St (7-3/60) and Wyoming (7-3/77). BOST is the only team with no losses in conference while WYO is tied with Fresno St with just a single L. Vegas and the GCR agree with BOST winning (V: -14.0, G: 58.1%, but it will be closer with Wyoming covering.

…..

Bowling Green is on tonight! 21-0 over Toledo with 12:00 to go in the 2nd.

…..

This weekend is about the FCS as we usher in the final regular season matchups (except for 2 games in the SWAC). There are 4 games between teams that are fighting for a conference title (or co-title). In the ASUN, Jacksonville St (8-2/147) is at C Arkansas (5-5/182). On the surface that doesn’t look like it fits, but JAX is 4-0 in the conference while CARK is 3-1. I’ll explain this in another post later in the week, but the Gamecocks are not eligible for the FCS playoffs, but the Bears are and could earn an automatic berth if they win and Abilene Christian of the WAC loses (short answer: the ASUN and the WAC share 1 auto-berth). It will be a tough road: JAX 59.2%. In the Big South, NC A&T (7-3/167) and Gardner Webb (5-5/177) play will both 4-0 in the conference. Winner gets an automatic berth. NCAT might get a wild card even with a loss but winning is certain. They do win, on the road, 56.6%. In the Colonia, it’s a little wilder because when William & Mary (9-1/129) invades Richmond (8-2/143) they are both 6-1 in conference, but so is New Hampshire. Richmond beat NH earlier this year, but there was no game between the other 2. So, if Richmond wins, they should get the auto berth in a tiebreaker, but if W&M wins and NH beats Maine, the berth will go to one of them – I can’t figure out all the rules (it’s another committee if that helps explain my confusion at all). That is the scenario the GCR is predicting. And last, but not least, the Northeast Conference has to 6-0 conference foes hacking away for the championship when St Francis (8-2/144) takes on Merrimack (8-2/151). STFR should win 55.5% but it doesn’t really matter because of a different rule Merrimack (will explain that in the coming soon post too), can’t play in the playoffs even if they win the championship. So, this is their claim to fame. FYI, next year they are eligible, and the NEC should be on notice. The 24-team FCS playoff is the highest level officially supported by the NCAA. Should be fun.

…..

Toledo finally got on the board but is still trailing 21-7 with 6:20 in the half. Ohio is now up 14-3 and in the red zone with 5:32 in the half.

…..

Last week, straight up, the GCR was 44-21 (.677) in the FBS and 38-23 (.623) for a decent, sort of, 82-44 (.651) given us a 676-309 (.688) for the year or 13.5 below the .700 target. Against the spread, the GCR was an average 34-29 (.540) compared to a Vegas favorite (if you bet on the favorite every FBS/FBS game) of 31-32 (.492). For the year the GCR is now 176-150 (.540) vs the Vegas favorite record of 148-178 (.454).

…..

Last scoring update of the post: Ohio did convert a field goal to go up 17-3 with 94 seconds left in the first half.

…..

Here are all the games. I hope you find the data informative and fun. Look for a post on Thursday (probably) that looks at the FCS playoff system and how the GCR would select the participants. Also, either Wednesday or Friday, look for an FBS conference comparison. With no further ado, thanks, G
