G’s Exploration or the Next Step in the Progression

Hello oh patient and wonderful college football fans! It’s been a long few weeks for dear old G whose day job has been a series of 14-hour days, but we are in good shape now and about to be to steady state allowing me to focus on the important things in life, aka the wonderful world of D1 football. Today, we continue our research into the preseason strength of schedules (SOS) for each team sorted by conference from easiest to hardest. So far, we’ve looked at the bottom 8 and we are nearly complete with the FCS.

…..

We start with the 17th place Missouri Valley Football Conference whose 12 members, which include 2 FCS powerhouses, have an average PS SOS of 2.7971 (compared to the FCS average of 2.729. The powerhouses are North Dakota St and South Dakota St, and if you ever get a chance to watch them play, it is worth the time. They would be ideal candidates to move up to Conference USA (or they could rule the MAC), imho, and be able to compete immediately. So far no word on the powers that be listening to my suggestion, but there’s always hope. As a reminder, (N) indicates a neutral site game, (P) indicates a Power 5 opponent, (G) indicates a Group of 5 opponent, and (D) indicates a non-D1 opponent. Here are the 12 from most challenging schedule to “here we go again:”

And our 2nd conference today, the largest in D-1 football, the 15-school Colonial Athletic Association which averages a respectable 2.9741 PS SOS with 8 of their members exceeding 3.000. There are no non-D1 games in the schedule and here they are led by newcomer Campbell Camels.

…..

Wow, over 10% of D1 (261) teams represented by these 2 powerful conferences. We still have a few left in the FCS before we move on the Group of 5 so stay tuned. Thanks for reading and especially for sharing with others as we try to grow the audience, G
