G’s Expectation or It’s Busy at GCR Headquarters!

Welcome back, college sports fans, to episode 732 which is another triple dipper into all three sports leagues we cover: college football as well as both men’s and women’s basketball. It’s still too early to have enough data to form an opinion on basketball games played and which may be important later since we are just on Day 3 of Week 1, but football is a different story as we began Week 11 last night. Ohio (7-2/56) took care of business at Akron (1-8/174) 28-20 but failed to cover the 14.5-point spread. Miami OH (5-4/96) was favored by 5.5 points and looked like a winner up 31-16 with 12:01 to play. Buffalo scored twice in just over 7 minutes and got their 2-pt conversion to force overtime. Prior to this game, the GCR had these two teams just one place apart (86th and 87th) so we predicted a close game. In OT, Buffalo (6-3/80) hit a field goal, then held MIAO to -2 yards. A missed 45-yarder sealed the comeback win, which the GCR predicted as well. For the week, we are 2-0 straight up and 1-1 against the spread.

…..

We have three CFB games tonight to entertain us starting with Ball St (3-5/124) at UMASS (4-4/95). UMASS began the season by upsetting Rutgers (worst ranked Core 4 team), then won three straight against two FCS teams and newly promoted conference foe Sacramento St (see next game). They began October 4-0, but the colder weather (and better opponents) undid them as they dropped the next four. The best news for the Minutemen is that BLST is not very good. Vegas has UMAS-3.5 and the GCR agrees to win and cover. The game is at 7:00 (all times Eastern) on ESPNU.

…..

In the expected blowout of the day, Sacramento St (2-7/173) who just got their first win against an FBS opponent as an FBS team, hosts Toledo (6-2/64). The only reason that this game would be closer than we calculate it to be is the long trip west for the Rockets. Sure, other conferences do this type of thing regularly, but the MAC, historically, has been very compact – at least until they added UMASS last year and Sacramento St this year. Vegas has this game going to TOL-24.5 and the GCR agrees to win and cover. Find this game on CBS Sports at 7:00

…..

Our final (football) game tonight is at 7:30 on ESPN2 featuring a couple of the directional Michigans when C Michigan (3-5/110) invades E Michigan (4-5/118) – this sentence sounds a lot like a game of Risk. Both teams still have a chance at bowl eligibility, and the loser of this game will be on a razor thin margin. Vegas sees it close with EMI-1.5, less than the 3.5 typically for home field advantage, and the GCR agrees in a 1-score game going to E Michigan.

With just 24 games on the docket, Men’s basketball is back for Day 4. Because no pairs of teams playing today have two games under their belts, we still are unable to predict any games. We will see more availability next week, we think. It also isn’t helping that two-thirds of the games today are against non-Division I (ND1) opponents. At least we have 8 teams joining the list of teams with at least one game played. Here’s today’s slate.

We have more Women’s games for the second day in a row with 36 on the slate today. Of the 72 teams playing, 19 are ND1, but we have 20 opening games today. These first days seem slow (at least to us), but basketball has a long season with 3 times as many games as football. Within a week (we hope), the rankings and predictions should start to make sense. Here are the Women today.

That’s it for today. Tune in tomorrow for a third-straight triple header (which will actually be common, but we are still getting used to the concept). Until then, we wouldn’t exist without our readers, so a heartfelt thank you; we wouldn’t have anything close to quality content without feedback and suggestions from readers, so a tremendous thank you; and we wouldn’t have the tremendous growth across all of our channels (this website, Facebook, and LinkedIn) without our readers taking the time to share, so a humble thank you, JoJo and G.
