Welcome back, college sports fans, to episode 733 or another triple-league day. We have 3 football games, 65 men’s basketball games, and 85 women’s basketball games today – the first one at 11:00am (all times Eastern). Let’s start with football.

On the one hand, the MAC did not disappoint with three games last night including an overtime game, a near-upset of epic proportions, and a blowout. Not to mention, all three games had the favorite failing to cover the spread (GCR was 0-3), but two did win (GCR was 2-1). Today we have our first FCS game of the week when SC St (7-2/139) tries to extend their MEAC dominance by besting Howard (4-5/242). Vegas has SCST-16.5 and the GCR agrees, although it’s a tossup to who will cover – each of the two metrics we use pick a different team. This season, we are using the standard approach officially, so SCST to win and cover. See this game at 7:30 on ESPNU.

Also at 7:30 on ESPN, we have an American Conference game with UTSA (7-1/44), a dark horse for the Group of 6 playoff spot, invading FAU (5-3/83). A win here and you’ll start hearing more about the guys from San Antonio as a threat to Boise St and others. Vegas has the Roadrunners-6.5 and the GCR agrees to win and cover.

Lastly, at 8:00, James Madison (7-2/41), on a two-game losing streak and possibly already out of the playoff picture, travels to Southern Miss (3-5/131) to try to get back on track. Vegas thinks the Dukes will do just that -13.5 and the GCR agrees that JMU will win and cover.

Switching to men’s basketball, it is still too soon for the GCR to predict games as we don’t have any games between two teams who have each played at least two. We do, however, have 3 teams (Bakersfield, Fairfield, and Penn) who are playing for the first time this season. Tomorrow, the final holdouts (Detroit, MS Valley, and Rutgers) play their first games. Of the 65 games today, 22 of them feature Non-Division I (ND1) opponents. These are Division II, III, NAIA, or J-Co’s that are taking a loss (not always) for money. Fortunately, we are approaching the 20% mark for these appearances for the entire season. As a sidenote, the GCR doesn’t give much credit to playing or beating these teams, but we do put a significant punishment for losing (similar to an eventual Top 25 team losing to a Bottom 25 team). Last but not least, we have our women’s basketball slate. The 85 games on the docket today include 13 first-timers (American, Canisius, Dayton, Gardner Webb, Long Beach, Maine, Michigan, N Arizona, North Florida, Robert Morris, San Francisco, Texas Tech, and UC Irvine). That will leave just 3 teams, 2 of which (Fairfield and UTSA) play tomorrow. The last college team of either gender to play this season will be St Joseph on Saturday. Like the men, the women have 17 ND1 games on the slate today. The men actually play a higher percentage of these type games over the course of the season (9.5% for the men vs 7.5% for the women). Some teams (both genders) don’t play any ND1 opponents while some have as many as four such games. Here are today’s women’s games.
